I live very near York but not actually in it. Previously I had been in the habit of visiting the gallery regularly, as part of a "day in town" or when meeting friends, and also of taking out-of-town visitors there. I understand funding is an issue, and I am sympathetic and even willing to pay something when I visit but... the proposed charge is just too high to make more than a very, very occasional visit. If others feel as I do, the unintended consequence of this charge will be to make art an even more marginal part of many people's lives and they will be less likely to visit, and then if the gallery isn't visited, what is the point of it?

A friend of mine, a local resident, was in the habit of visiting the gallery frequently, focusing each time on a limited range of pictures. Not affordable anymore! The Philistines and bean counters are in the ascendant.

I understand the funding problem that the trust has, but this could have been handled in a much more consultative, less autocratic way. Of course Art should be available to everyone - the question is How do we fund free access as grants are reduced?

I'd be prepared to pay a reduced entrance fee, not the tourist rate. How about introducing a free day for locals?

It IS a fantastic gallery now which all York residents should be proud of. Instead the Trust and Council are presiding over a PR disaster. Why did they not offer residents free access at least for the summer months so that they go home telling everyone what a great experience they had. Instead the trust CEO ignored the council decision to delay charges and is alienating local people, hitting the income they so desperately need. As for 'fears of public safety' on Saturday that is a blatant smear tactic against a peaceful group of residents who were all waved into the gallery in full view of Janet, police officers and the local press!

While I don't mind paying a small amount (as I can afford it) eg less than £5 to visit the art gallery, I want to see it being much more accessible to young people, local residents and those on low incomes so that everyone can participate. I would like to have seen the art gallery bring all of us with them, like York Theatre Royal's mass participation in "In Fog and Falling Snow", the youth theatre and the renovation of their theatre.

Well where does one begin,
YMT just backing up the Tory agenda if it can be sold sell it.
At a price well YMT your price is too high how dare you rob yes rob the citizens of York of the Art that was placed for them to enjoy.
Now only the better off in our city have access to art it's disgraceful and I as many others will agree over time Stealing the very art from under the people's noses by charging this amount is tantermount to theft the theft of the right for EVERYONE. In our city to enjoy art. The chance for children to grow with an appreciation of art and culture.
Well as a consequence you are denying them that right.
By all means charge tourists a small fee, but not the city's residents we already pay through the damn nose for everything else here now this I hope the whole thing collapses around your ears and nobody attends the gallery.

I feel that the art gallery should be free and I hope people on low wages or are seeking work can get a discount.
I suppose the cuts by City of York Council is the reason for people to be charged admission. I hope York Museums Trust will allow residents of York a discounted ticket.
People should have the opportunity to enjoy art for free.

This has been dealt with in a v clumsy way alienating many people who were excited re seeing a great new space & more of the collection. People with existent York cards (already more expensive than before) should have been allowed entry for the month of August or until their cards expired (donations welcomed). Some better form of graduated discounts could be thought out. This whoe fiasco-like situation has a v unfortunate 'feel' (echoing Lendal Bridge) to it. The Yk Press declared entry would be free til Council decision made (based on all info available to it & common sense) - this was overridden/ignored ensuring alienation cranked up!! Cummon CYC & Museums Org. You can do better than this!!

Having lived here all my life and been able to visit for free all that time,I have only been once. When I did I bought something from the gift shop. York residents won't cost the Art gallery a penny by having free access,only increase footfall and potential revenue in the cafe and gift shop. Museum artifacts are Yorks and residents pay council tax towards this whereas visitors don't.

As a writer, I often go to art galleries, not only to appreciate the creativity of the artists, but to make notes and find inspiration for a new piece of writing of poetry, fiction or a play. If there are charges imposed, this will result in my not making the effort to visit, together with quite a large number of my family and friends.
