I love to visit the Art Gallery from time to time - just to drop in for ten minutes now and then - the best way to appreciate art. I already pay for this through my taxes.

For the sake of all the culture loving people in our region who are unwaged or in receipt if a low income please keep the gallery charge free. We need to ensure EVERY family has access to art, not just those who can afford it.

Charge for special exhibitions maybe and ensure concessions are available, but not for general admission - ie. In line with other city galleries.

Keeping the gallery free for residents at least will ensure it remains busy. Have a 'donations' pod near the front door, we will give you what we can.

All art galleries should be free to enter for everybody. This is not a complicated idea.

Despicable and insulting, the art gallery, like all civic galleries should be free for all, not just the privileged!

I may not be from York, but I think all galleries should be free to the public

I think the gallery should be free to residents of York, with a charge being applied to tourists only, as I appreciate that the funding shortfall has to be made up somehow.

Perhaps I'm missing a point here. I believe that as many people as possible should have access to the gallery, but understand that they also need to get funds from somewhere. Why not charge visitors to York and offer a donation box - similar to that at the NRM - for York residents? That way those who can't afford it are not prevented from accessing what should be free, and those that can afford to are able to contribute to the gallery.

Well I hadn't heard about the petition and demo outside on Saturday. I've let the side down as I went on Sunday and ended gettin a card for the year as I was a local and had a york card ..it was £10 or £11 if paid by card which allows u in for free in all museums ...for a year ..(I didn't like the fact they took a pic as well as usual info !!)
I did complain at the fact the public had to pay ..local or not ..
Well they have my money now and my mug shot !!
But I disagree and art galleries should be free!!!

I am concerned that YMT had plans to put charges in place long before it became known to York residents. I feel that YMT and especially York City Art Gallery have shown little consideration for York residents.

Many of the pieces of art were donated to the people of York, and therefore should be available for free viewing.

No one should be surprised at Museums andante galleries reverting to entrance fees. Cameron is a self confessed devoted Thatherite, and whilst he has a majority we will see a quick return to her pet, and appalling policies.

Art should be for all. Preventing regular visitors because of cost will have an impact on other sources of income (such as the shop) for the gallery. I used to use it regularly, but will not use it now and will advise visitors against going because of prohibitive costs.

Even though I know the Council has serious budget problems, It's important that all York families can access the new Art Gallery.
