was planning a visit until I saw the cost of admission. Disgraceful!

this should be free so art can be experienced by everyone, not just those who can afford it.

York art gallery and it's contents belong to the citizens. It is not the private property of the council or any other body.

I have been going to York Art Gallery for years before I became an Art History Student at York. To say that the new charges are appalling is a huge understatement. The gallery should be free and accessible to all. To prevent this is nearly as bad as the government's desire to cut funding to humanities. The gallery is one of two which influenced my decision to study art, it's awful to think that new generations will not be able to walk in and have a look for themselves without the burden of a fee. If it was unavoidable to add this, then the prices still should not be as high as they are. Something needs to alter. So much effort for an amazing refurbishment, which many may now decide not to see.

because this is our inheritance and art is for everyone not just the well orf and exclusive. Ask for donations and keep charging those high prices for tea and coffee.

Art is important for everyone! Do not make viewing it something people must pay for - art is about more than this!

The art gallery should certainly be free for some, low cost for other York residents. Art galleries are a place for people on low/no wage, or with no home, or any difficult circumstances to spend time in and live within the community, enjoying art. By charging for the gallery you exclude a huge part of the populace, and a part that particularly now shouldn't be abandoned.

Scrap Trident (£100bn) and HS2 (£50bn+) and spend the money on galleries and other socially useful causes

Many people will be unable to enjoy this gallery if charged for entry. Conversely, many people who enjoy the gallery will happily give donations. Many galleries operate on this basis, and I hope that this one will, too.

Art has become exclusive to those not on low income. If necessary charge for visiting exhibitions as most other galleries do but don't penalise the less well off.

My daughter lives is York, & we both love art of many kinds. Galleries & museums should be free to access by all people, not only those who can afford to pay.

Public art should be free for the public to see. A high entrance charge will manufacture a situation whereby only the wealthy can access something we all should be able to see for free. It further widens the gap between rich and poor experiences, especially for a family group where free access to museums and galleries is so important to inspire young minds. Very sad indeed.

When it was free I gladly spent money in the shop and cafe, but imposing a non- voluntary admission fee will put off many, I certainly won't pay or visit the shop or cafe.
