York Art Gallery provides a unique cultural service to the city and region it serves. It should remain as a free sevice in perpetuity.

£7.50 is a ludicrous amount for residents to pay. I would be in favour of a nominal charge of say £1 or an optional donation and would then make more regular visits. I won't be visiting if I have to pay £7.50, sorry.

Entry should be free, as it was always intended to be. There should also be an opportunity to make a donation to the gallery from those who wish, and can afford, to.

The Tate Modern is free entry, Leeds Art Gallery is free entry. I understand these cuts are the direct consequence of the governments "austerity" cuts, but I didn't vote for the Tories and find glib remarks like "we are all in this together" coming from multi-millionaires who can afford to pay ridiculous entry fees offensive.

At a time when the arts are being squeezed out of education, I am voting for more art, not less.

Fully agree. Wrote a column about this when I worked at The Press and have just addressed this again on my new blog, Man On Ledge

This is a backward step for the arts and discriminatory aginst the poor.

I loved popping into the art gallery once or twice a week to work on my creative writing and to feel inspired. I cannot do this any longer!

This is the only way to keep universal interest in the arts alive in York.

How can you remove this wonderful asset from York's residents? £22 now will be £25, £30, £40 in quick succession. And at £30 for a family, tourists (whom CYC love best) Won't Go Either. Culture, history, art should NOT be for only the 1%.

Please leave the art gallery, and all other free museums in York, free so that people from every background can be educated on our past, present and future

Please keep it free - I never mind paying a charge for a special exhibition

If it was free, or even £2, I would go, visit the shop, use the cafe, and probably go back many times. As it is, I won't. Pity...

I agree it has to be free to be successful

Please keep the gallery free! Especially for residents, i've yet to take my son, and probably never will as I wont be able to afford it!
