I think it is disgraceful that they should want to charge York's own residents when in the past it has always been one of the few things without a charge. I hope people from york can enjoy this pleasurable and long awaited gallery without having to pay. Possibly an optional charity donation on the way in or out could be a solution?

I am an art student at York college, and I, along with many others, believe that the gallery should at least be free to York residents. This is disgraceful. What was the point in spending so much money on a beautiful gallery when not even the people living in the city and studying art at college will be able to comfortably afford regular trips there. I know I certainly won't.

Do none of you get it?
They can't afford to let people in for free anymore. Blame to government and local councils. Not the art gallery.
If they continue letting people in for free the place will close. Pay - it doesn't close.
Simple.

Great art has the power to inspire everybody, not just those who can pay to see it.

Apart from the obvious - art should be free - the emphasis on participatory approaches in Helen Graham's blog seems to hold huge merit

My Dad was a regular visitor to the gallery and was looking forward to it reopening but he won't be going now if you have to pay the best part of £10 to get in!

A large number of people won't be able to visit the Art Gallery if they start charging and families will be priced out of seeing their heritage. Council should reinstate their funding.

This is OUR heritage, and OUR gallery; Why can Hull, Sheffield, Harrogate and Leeds all have free galleries? Thisd is yet another example of, the commercialisation of our well-being.

Entrance to the gallery should be free. If a charge is levied then the only visitors you are likely to attract will be to the cafe.

The refurbished gallery may well be beautiful but it should be open to all at no cost - just as is the magnificent Yorkshire Sculpture Park where visitors pay only for parking. Charging will not encourage visitors but will deter them. This is art for all, not for those who can afford to pay to make a visit. Visitors will more than likely happily donate if it is free and there could be a token charge for specialist exhibitions. No charges please!!
