The Art Gallery has been a wonderful local resource all these years and a great source of pride. To charge York Citizens without consultation is a retrograde step.

The arts should be free and if NRM can do it so can the gallery, you make money from merchandise and cafes not by screwing over the locals who will no longer attend and will stop taking relatives and visitors to them because of charging

The art gallery and museums contain items that were bequeathed to the people of York. We should be able to see them without paying.

understand the refurb didn't come cheap BUT! If you want visitors to come in and spend you are just taking money that they may otherwise have spent in the shop or cafe and left them with a nasty taste in their mouthes. Wake up and smell the coffee! Fair enough for a special exhibition but £7.50 is obscene anyway.

Charging to see art is totally unacceptable. As an arts graduate myself, I believe that art is for all people, and denial of that principle for mere profit is pure elitism.

Museums are everyone's heritage; art and artefacts belong to us all--keep them accessible to everyone regardless of income. Museums bring many good things: keeping their collections equally accessible to all is morally right. The council needs to find ways to sustain culture and community. Please, CYC, no more new paving schemes, fixing what ain't broke and unnecessary refurbishment. Heritage is cultural infrastructure.

It's pretty much a disgrace that the City of York should not have a public Art Gallery which is free of charge to its citizens and visitors. Turning this cutltural space into a commercial project is wrong, unnecessary and exclusive..

before the closure of the art gallery I used to visit on a regular basis. because I am now a full time carer on benefit I will now not be able to visit the gallery.

Charging for entry will deter visitors and limit access, especially to those who might most benefit.

Have any of you actually read the news? Before being so nasty towards an organisation that has clearly been set up to look after all this wonderful art have you really thought this through? The sector has received MASSIVE cuts! The smaller places like York are hit the most. Of course all the big places in London will still get millions - therefore they can be free entry. But that may change soon also! Rather than slagging YMT off how about you support your local art network and pay a small fee. All those complaining about how you "can't afford it" - have you read that YMT are fighting for an access card? For those on low income and benefits? No - you probably didn't know that because you have read about it and have jumped on the FB bandwagon didn't you? A small fee or the place closes in a few years and you lose everything. You will have also read in the news like I did that one of the main structural walls was falling in, as was the roof and the store room was not up to standards. Come on people it's been free for years which is great but times are changing, new governments, new budgets. Why you are all attacking YMT is beyond me. Look at the bigger picture you idiots.

Art and culture should not be the preserve of the rich
