If you charge people to see art, privatization will come next, and in the end, art will only be available to the rich

This charge will reduce the accessibility of the art gallery to York people. It will not help the financial position either, as it will lead to a big drop in visitor numbers. If the Gallery must charge, at least choose a more reasonable figure, e.g. £3.00 for adults and £1.00 for children.

Read the news - all this may change. York is just one of the first. Other galleries have started charging. ONLY the bigger national galleries are keeping those finding smaller places have been cut by 60%. So many have no choice to start charging.

I hope they do! First comment I've seen that isn't attacking the trust but has realised its the council that is at fault here. Not the trust.

Agree 100% but this isn't the art gallery/york museums trust fault. Blame government and councils.

Again; have you read and watched all the reports on the BBC, independent? No! Clearly not.
They do not want to charge - they have been forced to charge due to government cuts. They have provided facts and figures yet all you people are going on about is that "they" (meaning the trust) are disgraceful, etc.
It's really making me laugh all this.

Let the council know. Ask them why all the council tax goes to them and why they are not giving it to the art gallery? If they did it would continue to be free. But they have cut funding by 60%!!!

And if they don't charge the art gallery will fall Into disrepair because the government are not helping them. So you make no sense. Your not looking at the other side of the coin. The CEO said on the BBC the didn't want to charge but they have been forced to!

this move into charging will, in spite of the Trust's predictions, result in a large fall in visitor numbers. The Art Gallery and Museums will decline in importance in the life of York's residents.
