YORK PUBLIC ART GALLERY SHOULD BE FREE OF CHARGE

This is civic building of vital importance to young artists in the making and older ones alike. To charge would discriminate and deprive some of a resource they should be entitled to see for free as often as they need.Whilst remaining affordable for the elite rich, those less well off would not be able to access this unique place. How can that be right? A city of culture such as ours should be encouraging all to see its art collections.

We have eagerly awaited the re-opening of the gallery, as it was always a great place for frequent short visits with our young daughter. We hope she will grow up familiar with art and galleries - they are places we should all be encouraging our children to visit. But, as a family, we would never be able to afford the proposed admission costs. Being able to visit the York Museums with a Yorkcard has been indispensable, and I feel strongly that the Gallery should also be free to York residents .

We have a responsibility to ensure art and culture is accessible and broaden the life experiences of all to ensure future generations of artists, historians and creativity from a range of backgrounds! By charging for access to these experiences we limit the opportunities to the wealthy! Is this the kind of world we want?

I believe that a lot of people will not have access to out local city art fakery as they will not be able to afford it. This is wrong.

Access to art should not be based on financial means.

Being York's artwork, belonging to the people of York, York residents should not be charged entry.

We would be excluding so many residents by charging. You don't have to pay at any other large galleries. What happened to art for all!

the arts should be available to everyone regardless of their means, especially when they are supported by public money - our money!

I agree - the York Art Gallery should be free. The planned charge cannot be justified, especially to residents of York who have patiently awaited the gallery's re-opening.

Flat fees are going to discourage use of arts from those of lower incomes. This is part of a picture our new administration is painting of arts seen as 'vanity projects'.

This is awful.. Art and culture for the wealthy, again.. This fee will stop those of us who are low wages from going...please think again...

As a teacher , parent and grandparent, I know that being able to introduce young children to art, history and culture through regular short (20-30 mins) visits to galleries and museums is of huge benefit and good fun. Such short, regular visits would be impossible if such a high admission price were to be introduced. Surely for York residents, the admission fee could be waived or at least, a nominal £1 charged.

Please keep it free.

This fee will raise a visit to the Art Gallery to an elite-only choice. Families will choose other paid-for activities ahead of it, every time. York Art Gallery and York residents will be the losers from this move.

A charge is a strong disinscentive to enjoy the cultural life of the City. Children lose part of their education, and the less well-off will not be able to go

Yorkcard should cover. Also could we recommend to family and visitors? Certainly not!
