Whilst I can understand the financial constraints of both the City of York Council and the York Museums Trust, I think it is a grave mistake to introduce such a high entrance fee, even for York residents. I think that many residents will be put off by an £8 admission fee. Probably more income would be generated if a nominal £1 fee was levied for York residents.

I think charges for York residents should be free and charges for anyone else should be as low as possible, certainly well below the £7.50 which has been suggested and would gravely reduce visitor numbers and likely income.

I feel really strongly that EVERYONE who lives in the city should have access to the Art Gallery. Don't let art become elitist - we all have a right to benefit from the arts.

If you want to make art elitist, start making it so that only those who can pay can see it.

The collection and the buldings belong to the City (us) and they do get a grant, albeit reduced because of Conservative/Lib Dem cuts. The City has no financial relationship with the Minster, but the Minster is aware that residents need a special relationship with our Cathedral and do grant free entry. All I can say to the Museums Trust is cut your cloth according to your purse and show a bit of civic responsibility to York residents.

At the very least, local residents should not be discouraged from popping into their art gallery

Not much is free in York and I strongly believe this should be kept free to ensure access to Art for everyone. Donations should be encouraged so that those who can pay may do so.

I remember when the York Art Gallery charged £2 for admission. I was often alone when I visited. When charge was removed the galleries were very popular. I think this experience will be repeated again and I deplore any charge at any Art Gallery.

This is another blow to the low-paid. Even the low-paid in York can't access the gallery now.

These facilities should stay free for residents, or the sad thing is, they will see a big drop in visitor numbers, and we all miss out!

Once again due to government cuts the poorest in society will be hit hardest. The choice of food v paying to visit the art gallery. We know what people will choose. Excluding the poor from seeing some fabulous art work which has been given or purchased by the council over the years. Disappointed but not surprised the Tory/Lib Dem budget can't stretch to supporting residents visiting free of charge or at a reduced rate.

TOTALLY agree.
Money should be no barrier to accessing the arts
