£7.50 is a disgusting amount to ask for entry to this gallery. Not only should York's very many visitors be allowed entry for significantly less - or free, ideally - but local people should be encouraged to enjoy art in their own city, not fleeced for the privilege.

The Heritage Lottery Fund is very keen on increasing public access to the arts and I know from projects I have been involved in that they definitely want more community inclusion where they give grants. Their large grant should surely encompass free access for local people. It might be worth approaching the HLF direct and asking them.

Went to Kelvingrove art gallery (Glasgow) yesterday. The gallery was full of people having fun and putting money into the donation boxes. You can pay as much, or as little as you can afford, or not at all. But cost will not debar you from the galllery.

As a York resident, I would be happy to pay £3 for a year's visits (as at Scarborough). At £7.50 I would never go.

Many of the works at the gallery were gifted to the people of York to enjoy, nobody should pay a compulsory fee to view these.
Perhaps a "suggested donation" could be requested at the door like in many other galleries and attractions but entrance would still be free.

Many of the works in this collection were given to the gallery so that they could be be seen by all of the the people of York rather than the wealthy few. It might be worth investigating if the decision to levy charges contradicts the legal terms of the bequests.

I think its just false economy. I paid £2 for a Yorkcard to get free admission for a year - are they going to refund me ???

I am really shocked by this. Overall and also the size of the proposed charge. This will put the gallery out of reach of many York families, meaning yet more of York's attractions being geared to tourists. It's also another blow for the city centre, just when the York BID might be set up to attract local families back into town. Yes, so a false economy. There are other ways to raise funds. Now is time for creativity, not time for excessive charges.

I think a fair solution would be to charge visitors £5 (£7.50 is excessive) and make admission free to York residents. I will gladly bring my visitors to the gallery, but not if we all have to pay £7.50. If this admission fee is sustained, it's 'goodbye York Art Gallery' from most of us living in York.

Starve minimum wagers of culture, keep up barriers. Attract only those who can afford, we should be greatful for the opportunity to see the same collection dragged out over and over?! Rather then a culture of people just spending time in a gallery, it being a meeting point and accessible to all- it is shut off to anyone who can't afford the high admission free. I see this fee like I see the homeless bars or spikes that have been installed... Shoe the undesirables away. I would rather get the train to Leeds and pay double to be be around 'culture' for free. Better yet Leeds council actually support artists who are making work NOW! Unlike the sorry excuse for the 'substitute' art s happenings for when the gallery was closed for about a thousand years.

Free / donation for residents, I'm not against tourists paying an entry fee, but residents should have a sense of ownership of their own City art gallery. An entrance fee for residents prohibits this sense of connection and makes it someone else's. Really bad decision.
