Everyone associated with Penn State are dismayed and saddened by the tragedy that has transpired at our University over the past week. Every Penn Stater takes the motto "Success with Honor" seriously, and it has embodied all that we believe in for college athletics. The gathering of information against Jerry Sandusky was several years in the making. He should be tried, and if found guilty, punished to the full extent of the law. The pain he inflicted on the children, and their families, is unforgiveable. In addition to Sandusky, the only people the Attorney General's office found to be culpabule were adminstrators, Tim Curley and Gary Schultz. If the allegations are true, I believe they should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Opinions on Joe Paterno's responsiblity may be mixed, and undoubtedly run strong. Joe Paterno may or may not have failed to act. These facts are still coming out, and the full truth may not yet be know. The decision to fire Coach aterno and President Spanier, whether correct or not, can not be undone. It is important to keep in mind, that at no point, has Tom Bradley, Dick Anderson, Galen Hall, Larry Johnson, Bill Kenney, Jay Paterno, Kermit Buggs, Bill Kenney or Ron Vanderlinden been accused of any wrong doing. These men have been an instrumental part of the Penn State family for years. They are the people our student-athletes are now looking to for guidance. They are the ones who have been in their homes, checked on their academic progress, and counseled them through good times and bad. No one from outside of Penn State can understand the pride this institution takes in our student-athletes' academic performance. These coaches do. They have become part of the State College community in a positive way, and call State College and Penn State their home. If the Board decides to hire a next year's head football coach from outside of the current coaching staff, it is making a weak concession to the media storm and denying all of the good that Penn State football has stood for. The individuals arrested for perjury are adminstrators, not athletic coaches. If you are to follow the "guilt by association" reasoning that is necessary to not hire Tom Bradley as the next full time coach, all current Vice Presidents at Penn State, Cynthia A. Baldwin, Rodney P. Kirsch, Paula R. Ammerman, W. Terrell Jones, Richard D. DiEugenio, Albert G. Horvath, Thomas G. Poole, Henry C. Foley, Blannie E. Bowen, Damon Sims, John J. Romano, Harold L. Paz, Craig D. Weidemann, and Robert N. Pangborn should also be fired. It will take strong decisions to help Penn State recover. Part of these decisions will be to recognize the strengths that we have. Tom Bradley is one of these strengths. He knows Penn State football better than anyone outside the program can. He has dedicated his life to the University, and no one has a bigger stake in helping to rebuild the trust and pride in the Universtiy that he does. We urge the Board of Trustees to not repeat the mistake of hasty decisions and bowing to a media storm. An announcement that Tom Bradley wil be the next Penn State football coach will be a small, but important step, in moving toward the future with an understanding of the past.
