An incident took place in Pineridge Secondary School, Pickering, where there was an issue with our MSA hoodie design, which included the outline of Palestine. Unfortunately, the board has asked us to discard the hoodies, which many of us feel is an act of silencing and oppression. In response, we are planning a peaceful protest and a walkout, In Sha Allah, to stand in solidarity with Palestine and to stand up for our right to express ourselves. We will also be starting a petition For now we are waiting on insight from a few different viewpoints about how to tackle this situation in the best possible way

Why are the kids being told to not wear the hoodies that express their support for something they strongly believe in. Why are we suppressing our future generation of kids to not stand up for what they believe in

Students are encouraged to celebrate their identities which can include causes which they support or that are part of their heritages. The board’s refusal to allow the students to wear the hoodies they designed is repressive and racist.

Standing by those who wish to express their elegance to those suffering injustice is the only right thing to do. The muzzle that the school is attempting to place upon these students is unacceptable.

It’s just the shape of a map—nothing offensive or political. Erasing it because some were ‘bothered’ silences identity and sends the wrong message about diversity and inclusion

That map had no name, no specific place written, just a map no where near resembles hate, it was for peace and representation to our indigeneity.

Truly a disappointment to see schools in the Durham region deny students their right to freedom of choice/opinion and limited clarification on dress codes
