Protecting Trans Rights at Mountain Ridge High School
(This petition was made by Deft Hubbard and Gael Louis)
Mountain Ridge High School discriminates against trans/non-binary students by making them use a “gender neutral bathroom” in the nurses office, without allowing more time to get to class. Trans students, and anyone under that umbrella term who do not identify with the gender they were born as can not use the locker room or bathroom they feel comfortable in without getting stopped by staff. Students have been threatened to get in trouble for trying to use the bathroom they prefer. One pupil is being threatened to get detention or get into even more trouble if he continues to use the men’s restroom. The school claims this is a safety issue, when it isn’t. He’s using the bathroom he belongs in. No students have said anything either because they mind their own business. The only people concerned are staff who are going out of their way to discriminate against trans students. Saying this is a safety issue is an excuse to be transphobic. Our school claims they want to help us feel comfortable while we’re here, but discriminating against us us doing the exact opposite. I, along with many other LGBTQ+ youth high school students are making this petition to raise awareness about trans rights, trans rights in schools, and in support of letting trans students use the bathroom they’ll feel most comfortable in. We plan to get at least 1000 signatures before we take this to the front office, and possibly the district.
