We, the students of Martin County School District, urge the Martin County school board to begin recognizing the preferred genders of the students. The LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, etc.) community refuse to keep getting ridiculed for not looking and or acting like our birth genders. If a student identifies as a different gender, that should be respected and they should be allowed to dress, act, and be recognized as the gender they identify with. The teachers should ask the students their preferred pronouns that they want to go by. There are many genders other than male and female. These genders include transgender, gender-fluid, agender, and many more. We ask you to please respect our decisions and who we identify as and not rejects us because or religion or beliefs. Please be open minded about this concept, which has been around for hundreds of years.

Every single person deserves to have their identity recognized and respected, not just cisgender people. Nonbinary students deserve the same recognition and respect as binary trans students do. It's time we do something about the prejudice that exists in our schools. This isn't something we can say will happen and then not pay attention to. I may not live in Martin County anymore, though I know what transphobia feels like, and it is that much worse when it happens in school, believe me at that.
