I have also experienced a near miss.Frankly, there are too many speed changes in a very short distance. Start with a 30 zone at the school/ church/ shopping centre and keep it at 30 right through to the turn onto Hammond Bay Rd.

I see so many near misses. As a driver there is so much happening it feels like everyone is racing. Just put in the speed bumps. They work, and make them go right up the hill.

I agree with that statements presented by the author of this fb post. I too have almost been hit at the intersection of 5th and Bruce at the university village crossing. Drivers do not give enough attention to pedestrian crossings nor the pedestrians themselves. I have had vehicles stop abruptly less than 2 ft from me, visible during the day, in that crosswalk. It is terrifying to be a pedestrian in Nanaimo.

For all the people in this area!!! My son lives there as well. He is super careful when he walks his three large poodles to a safe place, always on leash, and I don't want to read that a speedy, careless driver hit one of them, human or beast. I am VERY concerned after the old man was killed by another old man... and what I read in the Times Colonist today. He is not the only one who has been hit. That street needs speed bumps at least!

Definitely needs raised speed bumps. Departure Bay is so busy and lots of drivers still drive through there going 60km not 30km.

As a senior, there have been too many close calls while walking. If unskilled or careless drivers cannot be removed, at least do more to protect the pedestrians. PLEASE.

Sidewalks need to be added, widened and leveled out all the way up departure bay to Cilaire School. We see children walking to school inches away from moving traffic almost get hit on many occasions. Especially when a bus goes by, it almost hits their backpacks. A boulevard between the sidewalk would be beneficial all the way up Departure Bay Road

The scariest part of moving to Nanaimo was hearing how many kids have been hit/killed nearby. As a mother, this is very unnerving. Now, in the 8 months of living here so far these teenagers were hit by Drip and this elderly gentleman has now lost his life. Is there a particular number of deaths or injuries the city is looking to hit before rectifying some of the problems identified by community members? When incidents and fatalities are seemingly not enough, but hope doesn’t wane.. please sign!

I live right off Departure Bay Road and the speeding has become out of control. It’s so dangerous and our neighborhood is not safe. I am concerned for the safety of our community and pedestrians/animals getting hit by a speeding driver. I have almost been ran over twice while crossing in a crosswalk. How many have to die for the city to do something. Enough is enough.
