There has been documented evidence that there is natural trout reproduction occurring from Murphy Dam south to Canaan Dam in West Stewartstown.

This section of the river produces many especially large brown and rainbow trout, and many of them are caught in the winter and spring months when they are most susceptible.

While some of these fish are caught and released, many are taken out of the river by anglers.

Our aim is to better protect our spawning trout in this stretch by adopting catch and release rules during the period where they are most susceptible.

Our Proposal:

From Murphy Dam in Pittsburg, N.H. to the Route 114 bridge in West Stewartstown, N.H.

Jan. 1 - May 31: Catch & Release only (single barbless hook, artificial lures only)

June 1 - Oct. 15: The daily limit for brook trout shall be 2 fish or 5 pounds of fish whichever limit shall first be reached.

All other rules remain the same.

Help us achieve our goal today!

Reaching this level of support has been a long haul and I am exhausted but encouraged to see so many people who care about these trout. The pushback from the establishment has been quiet but heavy. I am going to keep pressing forward because the health of the river depends on us staying firm.

The feedback from local anglers has been draining because some people refuse to acknowledge the decline in our spawning trout. I am currently spending my evenings drafting formal requests for the department to review the current catch data. This process is exhausting but I am committed to protecting this river regardless of the resistance.

The climb toward one hundred names is exhausting and slow but we have to keep going. I need you to put this link in front of someone new today so we can finally break through this plateau.

The state should definitely make the river catch and release, at least in some sections, as well as designate sections for fly fishing only.

Very much support this effort to keep native trout in that stretch of the river.

This wondeful fishery must be saved, these modest regulations must be put in place.

If not NOW, when will the NHF&G ever start protecting the brood trout in this very ecological/economical stretch of the Connecticut River?

Tim Fleury

Yes! Let's protect them for future anglers

John Raff

Thanks for putting this together and helping to preserve the Natives

Putting fish back into the river enables other fishermen the same thrill of the catching that big fish too.

Keep seeing people dragging big breeders out of there in the spring and it drives me crazy. Just let them spawn so we actually have fish for next year.
