Would you, as a Pennsylvania trout angler, like to see our trout and waters achieve their greatest potential? Would you like to have the opportunity to pursue large wild brown trout year-round? Would you like to see our valley floor cold-water streams and our larger streams, which are now considered warm-water bass streams, become trout streams during the colder months of the year? Read on!

The purpose of this petition is to ask your support in proposing a study for consideration to Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission that would lead to a change in the Extended Season Regulation and the harvest limits from 3 over 7 inches to 3 under 14 inches. The end goal is to protect and manage the sizeable Brown trout ‘population planters’ both in cold-water and warm-water streams.

Outline of our proposed study:

  • Select a cold-water stocked stream that is considered a nursery stream
  • Do a baseline survey noting young of the year and age class structure on the selected stocked stream
  • Stop further stocking
  • Survey twice annually, pre-spawn and post-spawn, noting age class and size.
  • Include genetic sampling for identification and to distinguish between migratory (movers) and other resident Brown trout

The momentum behind this effort has grown into something I can no longer ignore. It is exhausting work to keep pushing forward but seeing this level of interest reminds me why we started this in the first place.

This is long overdue and a responsible step to take. Pennsylvania trout (including native brook trout) have made a comeback due to generations of effort to end pollution as well as our forests recovering from industrial era timbering. Providing once again the shade and cool waters needed to support world class trout streams and rivers

Protect the wild browns in PA I've grown to love these fish after finding them in high school and catching them on my fly rod. It is sickening seeing people kill them without the knowledge of what they are truly catching.

These fish are doing something in winter that can not be witnessed by summer sampling efforts. Please consider all of the species behaviors and make appropriate management decisions.

As a PA angler, I would love to see more effort put towards producing better conditions for trout, especially larger browns. Owning a drift boat, this would also provide a better experience on larger streams/rivers, and think it could open many doors for guides and other fishing related industries.

I think PA can be better at managing their trout populations. We’re a national destination and our fish management is way out of touch in terms of conservation and protection g wild and reproducing fish.

Let’s better regulate the wild trout population. Don’t stock streams that have wild trout. Limit the size of fish taken so the big fish breed and repopulate the stream with even more wild fish. Catching bigger fish only increases the awesome wild trout experience. Long live the wild and native trout!!
