OPEN LETTER

LONG ISLAND CITY HIGH SCHOOL NEEDS CHANGE! We are disgusted by the fact that the Assistant Principal of English Bloomfield resigned because of Principal Selenikas. She was faced with racism, discrimination, marginalization, and segregation in her career at Long Island City High School. Ms. Bloomfield’s reputation was broken down and disregarded. She was not given the rating that she deserved and she was forcibly asked to demote to a teacher. As a black administrator she was not given the same opportunity as her white colleagues. She was not able to pick novels that signified black injustice/excellence. Her responsibilities were taken away and she was no longer leading any student groups that she did an impeccable job in. Her voice was shut down. This has not been the first instance where a staff member felt excluded. Just a few years ago Mr. Scott, a gay black man also resigned due to the injustice he faced by her. As written in Ms. Bloomfield’s farewell letter there are only 5 percent of black teachers and that is only in the ISS department. She does not hire black teachers for other subjects. The staff is Long Island City high school is not as diverse because of how the Principal chooses her candidates. Why are the black teachers only good to teach special education students but not content subject areas? There have been many black students who also do not feel welcome by Principal Selenikas. She needs to resign now, not anyone else. There are adults in the building that care and show us empathy, and give us their world, but they will also leave if we don’t force this toxic leader to leave! We, as the students of Long Island City High school deserve a principal who shows us the same appreciation. Racism at Long Island City High School was exposed before :

My name is Salah-Deen (Adam preferred), and I am a student at Long Island City High School. I have written a detailed essay on this topic. Please share with other students and send this on the school instagram or other ways we can get attention. Please, let our voices be heard, bulldogs. /Users/jahaira/Downloads/Letter .docx

This woman had the nerve to call my husband a racist years ago. The irony is not lost on me. She openly favors only her fellow Greeks.

This principal is on the wrong side of history. Her actions are deeply harmful because they bolster systemic racism, create a culture or bias and hinder students of color to see a greater vision for themselves. This needs to be investigated.

Honestly, this is so sad to hear because I’ve know Ms.Bloomfield since freshman and I used to give her a hard time lol. But she always gave me a second chance or a pass grade because she knew I had potential and she’s a kind person. This is so sad and disgusting to hear about happen to her.

A young boy was able to enter the school and tried to stab my son this was swept under the rug and the parents were not notified. Interesting how many other things she did while under her leadership hope she goes soon for the sake of the kids life
