PETITION TO THE TOWN COUNCIL OF GEORGETOWN, INDIANA
We, the former and future residents of and visitors to Georgetown, Indiana, whose names appear below, respectfully request that the Georgetown Town Council immediately refrain from any action leading to the demolition of the former Georgetown State Bank building currently owned by the town of Georgetown for the benefit of it's citizens.
This building, located at 9110 Indiana Hwy 64 is a contributing structure to the National Register-listed Georgetown Historic District. We ask that the Town officials think "outside the box" and work with all interested Georgetown residents, and any interested individuals or organizations, to save this important town landmark. This should include, but not be limited to working with Indiana Landmarks to market the building for sale or lease to a third party willing to invest in the historic structure and return it to productive use in the community.
We, the undersigned, firmly believe that this structure has historic, economic, and aesthetic value to Georgetown, Floyd County, and Indiana, and that demolition will negatively impact Georgetown's unique sense of place and economic well-being.

Seeing this level of support for the old bank building brings back so many memories of my time growing up in this town. It is incredible to see how many people value our history as much as I do. We are proving that this landmark is worth fighting for.

We need to keep our history alive. Did this area not learn anything after the razing of the buildings in New Albany in the 60's??
Please reconsider and preserve the historic Georgetown Bank. Georgetown holds so many wonderful memories of my childhood. Carefree times when everyone knew everyone and when help was needed, it was there. My Aunt Sally and Uncle Russ owned and operated the little grocery across the street from the bank, Mrs Dreher ran a little shop further up the street, we would walk down there from school and get a candy bar and soft drink, I loved going in the Post Office and hearing the floor boards creak beneath my feet. Let's do everything we can to save these memories and find pride in restoring and maintaining the old Bank building.
In 1953 I lived in a rental house that is now part of the bank's parking lot. That bank is part of my personal history. Please save it.
Although I have been gone for almost 50 years, my heart will always be in Georgetown. This building was truly one of the significant buildings in our small business district. It is so sad to see small-town America become "museum pieces" instead of thriving. Conserving this structure speaks volumes about the value of small-town life.
As a current resident of New Orleans who works with architects to archive an preserve historical plans and documents, it's of the utmost importance to preserve historical structures. Demolishing these buildings is a thing of the past, as it is now seen as wasteful and detrimental to the landscape and character of our small rural towns. Repurposing and renovation is a more cost-effective and important
I agree this building needed to be saved. But I say it needed to be saved along time ago. It is to far in disrepair at this time. Several years ago there was concrete poured to have something to hold up the exterior walls. this concrete was poured as a floor. If you go up the steps to the second floor you will see the wall have given way from the floor. The building and by the way along with the old hotel should be hauled to the dump.
This building has some of the best character in Georgetown... would be a complete shame to tear it down.

I have very fond memories of this building..I worked in that building for 7 years before moving to the new building..Please help preserve the town, by keeping the old buildings.....
