The Chatham County Commissioners finally blinked and agreed to our demands for a transparent review and a pause on annexation. We forced them to stop treating our community like a blank check for developers. Stay sharp because we need to hold them to every word of this agreement starting now.

The Chatham County Town of Cary Joint Land Use Plan (the Plan) approved in 2012 guides development in Eastern Chatham County (ECC). The Plan is reviewed and updated every 5-years as stipulated in Section 2.6 of the Plan – the next review is scheduled for this year in 2022. We, the residents of Eastern Chatham County, request that the Chatham County Commissioners:
- Make the entire review process transparent and include the voices of ECC residents.
- Conduct studies to address concerns of ECC residents regarding the impact of current and projected growth so that an informed and thorough review can proceed.
- Pause land annexation until an informed and transparent review process is completed.
Development can be done responsibly but ECC residents need to have our voices heard by Chatham County officials and Town of Cary during the review process!

The Chatham County Commissioners are still trying to ignore our demands for a transparent review process. I have been spending my nights reviewing the land use plan and the arrogance of these officials toward our community is staggering. We are not letting them quietly pave over our rural land while they hide behind closed doors.

Responsible development needs to incorporate land preservation, proper water management, and low-density housing. It also must include adequate fire and police services as well as the addition of public schools.
The proposed land use plan makes little sense with respect to preserving green space. Preserving green space is NOT defined by clear cutting and replacing with impervious surfaces, especially without regard to impact to local waterways.
We need a smart, meaningful land use plan. Not one that gives way to a repeating pattern of land sale, clear cut, annexation, density increase (even above plan), grade it flat and disregard for runoff into existing neighborhoods and the watershed.
Concerned about storm water runoff (peak flow changes), traffic, loss of vegetation and trees. Would like to see new developments incorporate buffers to ease transition to current neighborhoods, retain more green space / trees, and consider Triassic soils for water catch ponds.
I am very concerned that the 2022 review will not include voices and concerns from current Chatham County residents.
Preserve the rural character.

I agree with the complaints and desires already expressed. Too much development noise, traffic and road damage, loss of night sky viewing. loss of trees, erosion, and the rural ambience that made me so glad to move here from the town of Cary years ago. Please consider the desires of those of us who have been here for years as well as the health of the lake.
