It has just come to our attention that the library at Whitewater Valley Elementary will be losing approximately half of it's current space due to the addition of a "Fast Forward" computer lab. Construction is set to begin Monday, December 23rd. This lab is something which no one seems to know much about as there has been no communication from the school about what this is. From what we have been able to gather though, it appears that this resource will only be used by some students in the school. While we are in no way opposed to assisting these students- they are, after all, our children, we as parents are concerned that the decision to halve the size of the library is a decision that has been made in haste and perhaps a better solution can be found. For instance, there are two separate music rooms at the school. Could those two rooms be combined into one? Could a portion of one of those two rooms be used for the new lab? These are just two possible solutions, perhaps there are others that could be discovered that would prevent the need for drastically reducing the size of the library, a resource ALL children in the school use, whether they are struggling or advanced. For many students, this may be the only library they have exposure to, lets give them the best possible library we can.

I am amazed that this is being done without parents being notified. Libraries are important part of the learning process, not just the reading aspect but also the responsibility of choosing a book and returning it. I am all for computer labs and helping students but NOT at the expense of tossing books due to lack of room.

Our library is already cramped, it is so sad the librarian will have to discard books now that she will not have the space to keep them. Teaching kids to read and to love books is so important! I understand we need a "computer lab", there has to be another solution to this.

Fast forward while a useful program should not be put in place at the expense of the school library.

I think other options should be looked at first before taking this action.
