We fondly reminisce about a time filled with harmony, where each day began at the core of our school. Parents joyfully dropped off their children, exchanged warm greetings with teachers, and shared friendly hellos with fellow parents. Regrettably, a shift has occurred, and now some walk in, some drive, and some opt for a distant drop-off, causing a fragmentation of our once-centralized hub.

While some are fortunate enough to experience the heartwarming arrival via bus, others walking, driving, or dropping off find themselves scattered, diminishing the sense of unity. Recognizing the impracticality of expecting parents to make multiple trips from the distant parking lot to the school, we advocate for a revival of the former approach. Let's rekindle the spirit of togetherness and restore a sense of cohesion to our mornings.

Apart from the numerous other reasons, one must also contend with challenges like the intense heat during walks, parents tending to small children napping in their cars, toddlers grappling with the journey, caring for babies, accommodating the elderly, and managing time constraints.

To address the speed concern, we recommend strategically placing additional speed bumps and enhancing signage for better visibility. We acknowledge that if this issue persists beyond control, there may be a need to reconsider the privilege..

I really never imagined this many people felt the same way about our morning routines. It is humbling to see how much this truly matters to all of you.

In the heat of the day for pickup the kids are really tired. It’s very hard for them to walk so far to the cars. And that means as parents we are either carrying them or cajoling them. If there is specified time when cars are allowed into the parking area, the school can be sure the kids are kept away from the road so everyone is safe. The window for pickup can be short to limit traffic but still allow for a smoother and less heat-intense experience of pickup for the kids.

Walking in and out of the school disproportionately affects parents and children who may not have access to the bus- so they are already disproportionately affected by the amount of time that getting to school takes the parents each day. It also is not equal treatment of the children who are equally as exhausted at the end of the day as their peers - especially during the hot summer months- and have to walk out the school instead of riding the bus. The walk adds stress for working parents, and disproportionately affects families with kids in various grades even more. Some parents make the walk in and out 2-3 times in the afternoon, often dragging small children and babies with them. My preschooler walks out with me then walks back in and out for his older brother. It’s a beautiful but impractical idea that only affects a small percentage of families, and it is not right that all of the children do not receive equal treatment or access to an easy drop off and pickup just because they cannot ride the bus.

A very symbolic issue of power, rules to be followed by all and parents finding a voice in the school we want to see!
