· We, the citizens of Hampton, insist that the city manage channel upkeep (dredging) as part of the recurring maintenance budget vice Capital Improvement Process (CIP) to ensure the continued navigability of the Long Creek/Salt Ponds channel, thus helping maintain the value of area homes and properties, and their tax value to the city.

· Accelerate CIP spending for inlet infrastructure improvements that will significantly decrease maintenance costs by reducing sand migration into the Long Creek/Salt Ponds channel.

Updates

April 9, 2014

The feedback from neighbors remains focused on the long-term utility of the inlet rather than just the immediate need for dredging. I am currently organizing the feedback to present a more cohesive argument to city officials regarding the fiscal benefits of preventative infrastructure improvements.

Seeing this conversation grow reinforces how many of us view the health of our local waterways as a fundamental responsibility. It is heartening to see neighbors connect over the need for a more sustainable approach to how our city maintains these shared resources.

Salt Ponds is not only an important source of revenue to City of Hampton, but also an important safe harbour during major storms. There are only very few available in the area able to accommodate larger sailboats etc.

Along with many others, I have been paying property tax to Hampton for many years. What brought me to Hampton was Salt Ponds/Long Creek. Need to keep it open. From the city's perspective, it doesn't make economic sense to continue to just dredge whenever the inlet fills up. Fixing the problem would be much more cost-effective in the long run.

Being located on navigable water is what drew us to this area...please keep the Salt Ponds dredged or slash our taxes accordingly.

i have run aground in this channel several times. It is a narrow channel with a blind turn. This makes it very dangerous to all boaters.

As a property owner, boat owner and resident of Southall Landings, the navigability of the Long Creek/Salt Ponds channel affects me in several ways. Dredging of the channel is essential to maintaining local tax values and various business city revenues

We live outside of Richmond and chose Salt Ponds to dock out boat after consideration of ALL other marinas in the Hampton Roads area. Keep the inlet dredged for safety of navigation and it will remain a place for out-of-towners and transients boater to come. Don't dredge it regularly and revenue which would otherwise exceed pleasure craft taxes will disappear.

Salt Ponds/ Long Creek is a vital waterway and must remain open for the cities of Foxhill and Buckroe to function properly. KEEP IT OPEN AND CLEARED
