Petition to Protect BUET's Academic Freedom from Political Interference
We are deeply concerned about the recent attempts by political parties to exert influence on the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). BUET, a premier institution of higher learning, has a long and distinguished history of fostering academic excellence and producing world-class engineers. The forceful entrance of political parties threatens this legacy and undermines the core principles of academic freedom.
From past history we have seen that the involvement of political parties and student politics in the university campus causes numerous issues, such as, disrupts the academic environment and creates a climate of fear and intimidation, creates a climate for student violence that may cause injuries and even deaths, creates hostile environment for students and faculties that hinders the pursuit of knowledge and critical thinking and takes a way academic freedom and freedom of expressing differences of opinions.
We urge Bangladesh Government and the University Administration to take immediate action to safeguard BUET's academic freedom from political influence. We advocate for strict enforcement of the existing university policies that prohibit political activities on campus, maintain channels for open dialogue with students and faculty to address concerns and develop strategies to protect academic freedom.
By signing this petition, we express our solidarity with BUET and its commitment to academic excellence. We believe that a strong and independent BUET is essential for the future of Bangladesh.
