We, the residents of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, are committed to fostering a vibrant, self-sufficient, and family-friendly community. Currently, an ordinance prohibits the keeping of chickens within our city limits, except in specific agricultural zones. We believe it is time to repeal this outdated restriction and allow residents the freedom to responsibly raise backyard chickens.
In many neighboring cities, residents are already allowed to keep chickens, and it's time for Pleasant Hill to follow suit. Given that our town's school mascot is the Roosters, embracing backyard chickens aligns with our community's spirit and identity.
Why Repealing the Restriction on Backyard Chickens is Important:
- Addressing Economic Challenges: With grocery prices rising and inflation impacting household budgets, backyard chickens provide an affordable and reliable source of fresh eggs. This helps families reduce their grocery bills and strengthens food security within our community.
- Educational Value: Raising chickens offers valuable educational opportunities for both children and adults. It teaches responsibility, respect for animals, and an understanding of where our food comes from—lessons that align with our community's core values.
- Environmental Benefits: Chickens contribute positively to our environment by offering natural pest control and fertilizer, supporting organic gardening efforts, and reducing household food waste. This promotes a sustainable lifestyle that benefits both our families and the planet.
- Strengthening Community Bonds: Repealing the restriction on backyard chickens encourages neighborly sharing and cooperation. Not everyone may have the space or ability to keep chickens, but those who do can share the benefits, fostering a stronger sense of community and mutual support.

I was looking at the mascot again today and honestly it just feels so silly that we have this whole town identity based around roosters while the actual birds are still effectively banned from our own backyards. People keep messaging me with these great stories about their gardens and how much they would love to have a few layers out there so please keep those notes coming because they definitely help when I am trying to explain this to the local officials who seem to think this is a much bigger deal than it really is.

We have an acre backyard. Please allow chickens to help control the tick population.
I am so hopeful! Please look at the Missouri Constitution freedom to farm act as well as the legislation passed the prohibits HOAs from banning chickens as well.
I agree wholeheartedly and believe this would be a huge benefit to the city and the local businesses, such as the local feed store.
So many communities allow this. It should be allowed with reasonable guidelines.
Last vote the city counsel had said chicken carry diseases. Being a kid that grow up in chicken houses, the only way that happens if they are not maintained and that is a chicken house with anywhere from 30-60 k chickens. Every city around us has them. Pleasant hill needs to stop the tyrant acts and start listening to their citizens. We want chickens
Eggs are too expensive to not allow a few chickens.
Long overdue, we’re surrounded by legalized backyard chickens in counties, cities and towns all all around us.

Please make sure that HOA’s ( specifically Sugarland Estates) cannot prevent homeowners from having chickens. We have a 1 acre yard and plenty of space for a few chickens to roam!
