The local council has officially confirmed that restoration of the canal habitat will commence immediately. Your collective persistence ensured this outcome and I am grateful for your dedication to protecting our local environment. Hopwood Service Station (Rochdale Road, Slattocks, Middleton, Gtr Manchester) has destroyed a tract of ancient canal walkway habitat without prior public consultation. Over the years, wildlife such as birds, newts and frogs have been seen to use this habitat. This destruction has impacted residents, visitors, and wildlife alike. This is a petition to voice objections which were never heard.

The response to this petition has demonstrated that the community deeply values the preservation of our local canal habitat. This momentum confirms that the destruction of this area was felt by many beyond just the immediate residents.

I agree with Alan Rayner. Whilst i appreciate that we were not consulted, this area has been an eye sore for too long and now its clean and tidy and we have lovely views of the canal and the land beyond. With regards to boycotting the garage, this is cutting off you nose to spite your face. The garage has been a vast improvement to the area and the owners have made a great efforts to tidy up what was a locked up building and made the area looked run down. If you are happy to have to travel elsewhere for your goods when you have a great little supermarket and garage on your door step then thats your choice. I for one will not be boycotting it.

Newspapers should be contacted to make people aware. First the 24 hour off license and now they take a view and a natural habitat without having the balls to speak to the community.

Apparently they said their sales would increase if people could see the garage from the canal? I'm 5' and even I could see it.

Habitat should not be disturbed even with correct permission timing is crucial as to be least detrimental to wildlife. I object if this has been with no thought or consideration.

The distruction of an ancient hedge a beautiful old part of the canal tow path with no concern for nesting birds, frogs or public opinion.

re the two comments below, I've never seen such tripe in my life. The petition has nothing to do with 'boycotting' the garage, so most of what you've said is irrelevant. And also, 'eyesore' doesn't apply, have you seen it now? Especially from the canal side, where you now have a lovely view of the back of a garage as you wander the path. This is about respect for life and habitat over ignorance and callousness. Which side do you want to be on? ...
