To Whom It May Concern:

We are students, alumni, instructors, and community members of the CSULB Shotokan Karate Club, asking for your consideration and support.

It has come to our attention that the chair of the Department of Kinesiology, Dr. Jan Schroeder, plans to schedule a Self-Defense class on Mondays and Wednesdays at 12:00pm in KIN 60 for fall 2018. The CSULB Shotokan Karate Club has met at this same time and place for the past 50 years. There are other time and location options for the Self-Defense class, while there are no other alternative times or locations for our club to meet. Therefore, such change will jeopardize the existence of the club.

Over 50 years, the CSULB Shotokan Karate Club has connected thousands of members working to improve their physical health and mental focus, and the gain strengths of courage, confidence, and self-discipline instilled by the serious practice of karate. Benefits of karate training are seen in all aspects of their lives.

In addition to practicing karate, the club offers opportunities for social gatherings, performs demonstrations on campus, and participates in community service. Club members have been selected to represent the US at international tournaments.

We ask for your support to help us preserve the 12:00pm Monday and Wednesday practice time and place, as these hours are historically the most convenient for our student practitioners and are therefore the best times to attract new members, to continue the tradition of serious karate practice on the CSULB campus. The loss of this particular time and place will jeopardize the club’s existence and its opportunity to be a positive influence in the lives of future students.

Please consider allowing the CSULB Shotokan Karate Club to continue using its established meeting time and place, especially when the Self-Defense class can be offered an alternative time and location. Your endorsement will greatly impact the future of the club, and its present and future members.

The CSULB Shotokan Karate Club will be celebrating its 50th anniversary on May 5, 2018. Our wish is to be able to continue to pass down the tradition of karate training to future students. For that we need your support.

Thank you for giving us the time to express our concerns. We thank you for your support. If you have any questions regarding this petition, please feel free to contact Trung Pham at (714) 454-2072 or Abby Kaw at (714) 624-5361.

Sincerely,

The Members of CSULB Shotokan Karate Club
