Please keep CSULB Shotokan karate classes in place. Their team inspire and encourage others as well as help the community. Why would you want to change that?

Shotokan has been a very important part of my life. Through its discipline of keeping a strong spirit it has helped me mature in every area of my life. I think many people can benefit greatly from such a wonderful club and it will be ashame to deprive others of the experience.

Trained a lot of great hours with this club. This is the only time when the serious member participation and mentorship can take place. Please, university admin, consider longwithstanding community traditions and their value versus 'rebuilding the wheel.'

I was a member of the CSULB SKA Club during my time as a student at the University from 2001-2003. This club goes beyond what it promises as it provided a community and a family that, still today, I am a part of as a Black Belt. The schedule during which it meets was crucial for my ability to participate. Please keep said schedule in place.

As a former CSULB grad and current professor at another state school, I wish to see this incredible club continue to thrive for it has tremendous value to the University. I was a member of the club during the 2016-2017 year and stil always look forward to visiting and practicing with the group. It’s also a wonderful way to stay involved in The Beach community. Student organizations are an integral part of the student experience and help bring alumni and community members to campus. As a donor to and member of CSULB’s Legacy Foundation, I would be disappointed to see this club die. Joining the club changed my life for the better and kept me tied to campus and it’s students and faculty even a decade after graduating. Go Beach!

This club meeting time is not only good for club members but for students of other karate / self-defense classes as they can make up classes during the club practice. The club itself is a great place to learn practical skills that can help students in their future careers and personal lives.

I have been involved with Shotokan Karate club as a non member for many years and have seen the positive impact that this has had to many people throughout the community including myself. Not only does it teach you about self defense but it reminds you of the importance of togetherness.

I began practicing with the club in 1997 when I was a student at CSULB. I would attend the noon classes because they always seemed to fit my busy class schedule. The training I received through club practices has helped me immensely in my personal and professional life. The karate clubs teachings helped me endure medical school and has shaped the way I practice medicine. It would be such a shame to destroy the positive impact this club can have on the futures of CSULB students. Please leave the 12 noon practices in our dojo intact for CSULB Shotokan Karate practitioners open. Thank you for your consideration.

There are countless students who enjoy working out intensively in the morning, are busy in the afternoon and evening, and retake the same Self-Defense class of the same schedule in the following semester(s). Therefore, by keeping the schedule and location of the Self-Defense class the same, not only will many students be able to enroll in Self-Defense class, the students will also be able to include the class to their regular workouts, truly learn how to defend themselves on the daily basis, and maintain their full-time student status.

Please do not replace the karate club practice with the self-defense class. Although seemingly minor, this decision may greatly reduce the access that potential and existing students have to practice the art of karate and to experience the deep and far-reaching benefits of karate (positive transformation of the individual and consequently, the campus and community around them). Self-defense, although important and useful, is only one aspect of the more holistic practice of karate. Please allow the karate practice to continue to be taught in its most authentic and impactful form.

Removing the noon club practices will make it more difficult for students to participate. Please keep the noon club practices.
