Petition Against The City of Camarillo Raising Bus Costs 220% Without Providing Aid
We oppose the City of Camarillo raising costs for monthly bus passes and Dial-A-Rides on the Camarillo Area Transit (CAT) by an average of 220% without offering any sort of aid to help people afford these severe increases in price of monthly bus passes and Dial-A-Rides because:
- Most of the Camarillo Area Transit (CAT)’s ridership is elderly and/or disabled, including decorated US military veterans, which means they both are the most reliant on public transit to go anywhere and have the least amount of financial resources with which to handle these sharp price increases.
- Many disabled and/or elderly people, including decorated US military veterans, in Camarillo are now having to limit how much they go out into the community due to not being able to afford their prior level of public transit at the new sharply increased prices.
- The entire reason CAT provides Dial-A-Ride services in the first place is to obey the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which mandates the existence of a service that provides public transit access to people who are unable to get themselves to a bus stop.
- If disabled and/or elderly people cannot afford to use the service that provides public transit access to people who are unable to get themselves to a bus stop, then that completely defeats the point of having a service that provides public transit access to people who are unable to get themselves to a bus stop.
- Public transit is inherently a government service, not any sort of business venture.

I have been reviewing the personal stories left here regarding the sudden cost increases for our transit system. These accounts illustrate how isolating this policy change has become for our neighbors who rely on these services for their daily independence. I am currently compiling these experiences to present to the city council so they cannot ignore the human cost of their decision.

Seeing such a strong response highlights the urgent need for local leaders to reconsider these price increases. We are clearly reflecting the concerns of many people who feel left behind by this policy.

Please reconsider raising the rates for Dial a Ride especially for disabled citizens and/or provide some sort of assistance. People on a fixed income cannot afford this huge jump in rates
If the low-income vulnerable population has to stretch their minimal income to cover these fee increases it could have a domino effect impacting their entire livelihood. The city needs to take care of their community members I'm sure they can make up for the revenue somewhere else.
Greg Camarillo Government needs to find ways to fund this service for those in our community that rely on this as a transportation lifeline with limited financial resources. This would be transportation money well spent compared to the millions spent on frivolous street islands/medians.
Let’s reduce rates, not increase them. This Significant raise and the cost of transit will definitely impact me, a Vietnam war veteran, 70+ years old, and disabled.
My sister is a regular CAT rider in Camarillo. It is inconceivable that the City of Camarillo would make up for 20 years of no increases in one year. Camarillo can certainly afford to keep public transportation available and affordable to those who truly need it. Thank you.
This service is invaluable to caretakers, family that needs help with transportation with their loved one. Used it many times for my mother.

It's ridiculous to raise public transportation prices so high that the people who need it the most won't be able to afford it. Many can barely afford food and now they have to somehow budget for a 220% increase in transportation costs?? Horrible decision!
