Do you feel like Bio 100 should be evaluated at Hunter College?

Not every student is cable of teaching themselves, not every student is cable of going to the tutoring center, we pay matter to be hear to learn and to be taught, what’s the point of spending the money if we are just spending time teaching ourselves

As someone who really has tried their best in science, this course completely discourages me. The abundance of content without reassurance makes you feel like a failure. I understand that Hunter is competitive, but when you create an environment that people have no space to succeed, its really disheartening.

Bio 100 and 102 need to be revaluated by having the exams actually reflect the textbook and being taught by professors who are aware of the students' go through

We should be given a fair chance with resources to actually help us succeed in this class. This class should not be harder than upper science courses. 50 min recitation once a week does not help us understand 4 hours worth of materials.

I’ve been putting in consistent effort, but it feels like the course is being made intentionally harder, which is really discouraging. I understand the importance of being challenged, but I hope the difficulty stays fair and aligned with what we’ve been taught.

This course was described by several Hunter College employees, including a pre-health advisor, as a "weeder" class. I do love the professor, but online, video lectures, and professor office hours being evrey two months, make this class, and the other intro science courses with the same lecture style, extremely difficuly to suceed in. The professors make it clear that the only way to succeed is to go to the tutoring center, and TA office hours multiple times every week, on top of expected self-studying, and actual class time, which has prevented me from keeping my job. I am more than willing to go to tutoring and office hours, but the expectation that this should be done multiple times a week, every week, for all students enrolled shows that the course itself is not intended to allow students to succeed. Actually, I think that is the opposite of what it intends.

I love biology so much but taking it at hunter made me hate it

Questions were asked on the exam that could not be prepared for. An example includes “ what kind of bonds do not exist in fatty acids in the human phospholipid bilayer” the answer was fatty acids with trans bonds. This is not in the book and was not covered in lecture. The exam featured numerous questions like this. Grading of short answers was also especially harsh. Not including every single detail despite showing clear understanding of the question received significant points off. It’s not right to have 600 students try their best to average a 59 when questions asked were not even marginally taught in the book or lectures. Actually the book should be a reference material and exam questions are supposed to largely relate to lecture. The lack of ability to prepare for the exam with lecture material due to large percentage of questions not covered in lecture or even in the book makes the course unfair.

The teaching style of this class needs to be changed, the lecture videos are not enough for the exams. Exams require critical thinking to apply concepts, but we are not taught that way of analyzing in assigned lectures. I wish there was a better teacher to help me apply knowledge through critical thinking by providing enough practice

Personally for the first exam I studied so much and I still was not able to pass and I failed very badly although I was confident I knew the material and the short responses were not fair in my opinion so much content to fit into a specific 2 sentences is not fair either. I think there needs to be a better way that bio is taught at Hunter because how do you expect me to continue pursuing science if I can’t get through the basic first biology and how do you expect me to follow a career in stem genuinely liking it if it’s this difficult?

My sister is currently enrolled in Hunter College taking BIO 100, and she's really struggling because her professor doesn’t show any interest in the students. Instead of providing guidance and support, the professor simply asks students to watch videos and engage in self-study, which is particularly challenging for a biology class. Hunter College should prioritize supporting students by ensuring that professors are committed to teaching effectively and engaging with their students. It's disheartening to see how some professors make the learning experience incredibly difficult for students, especially in subjects like biology where hands-on instruction and support are crucial for understanding complex concepts.
