(Signatories must be Peaks Island residents of voting age please)
Advisory Petition to the Honorable Paul LePage, Governor of the state of Maine, and members of the Maine State Legislature.
WHEREAS, the Honorable Windol Weaver, R-York has submitted a bill to the current legislative session that would permit the secession of Peaks Island from the City of Portland without meeting the requirements of the existing State statute on secession; and
WHEREAS, the decision to secede for a community is difficult if not impossible to reverse; and
WHEREAS, existing statute requires sufficient time for fact finding, discussion, negotiation, and election to complete the act of seceding from a community; and
WHEREAS, a fair amount of time is provided by law for all with interest to research, dialogue, debate, and provide information to each person participating in the secession vote; and
THEREFORE, we the undersigned do petition the State Legislature and the Governor to require that any secession effort on Peaks Island follow the process laid out in existing State of Maine statute.
(Please include your Island address in the "Comments" box to complete your signature)
Seeing this level of support confirms that my neighbors share my deep anxiety about the future of our home. We are finally proving that the residents of this island expect a fair and transparent process regarding our status. I am grateful to everyone who has stepped up to defend the integrity of our community.

This feels shady. Why are we trying to bypass the law? Do it right or dont do it at all. 88 Seashore Ave.

125 Island Ave. We need to follow the rules here. Rushing this without looking at the facts is a bad move for everyone on the island.
