The City of Papillion is sending out letters throughout the community instructing residents to move their sheds. It seems most people believe the proper place for a shed is often the back corner of their property and this is in conflict with city codes which require an 8 foot setback. This petition is to seek a reasonable solution between the Papillion City Government and it's residents.

This 8 foot rule was enacted during a time when people's yards in Sarpy County were MUCH bigger than they are today. 8 feet chews up most of people's back yards and the utility easement is dumb because they ran their lines back and forth all over my yard. This is an antiquated rule that should be revised. 4 feet seems more reasonable.
I think this code is ridiculous. We got a letter from the city Stating the issue of our shed. This issue was not Put in the documents when we bought the house 2 yrs ago. . So this was a preixisting condition. So do we need to sue the old owner for this "condition" what a ridiculous situation.
What about grandfather rights? If a shed has been there for years, why should someone have to move it now when new laws are passed? Our house on Dublin Drive was built over 40 years ago and it isn't 8 feet from the lot line. Now we can't even add another room onto the back of our house without building it 8 ft from the lot line. There are other houses that have a l-shape design on the back side. That was OK back then, but we can't do it now. It would like pretty silly to put a room in the middle of my house on the back side. So, we are stuck with leaving our house the same size.
I disagree with the city of Papiilion's shed code requirements. Puts sheds in the middle of the yard leaving no where the kids can play!
8 feet is absolutely ridiculous. Puts sheds almost in the middle of some people's backyards! Nobody else has that large of a standoff from the property line, so what could possibly be the legitimate reason for it in Papillion?
I hope they will consider changing the 8' 5' rule or at least be willing to make exceptions. When the homeowner can show they are not over any lines or it is a non permanent shed they should not be held to the current code. As non permanent I am referring to the plastic sheds you can buy, put up & take down & cause absolutely no damage. Just takes a couple hours to do so it could easily be moved if needed to be.
This is a Property Rights Issue for your group and I applaud you and encourage you to keep standing firm against antiquated laws/codes and overreaching government intrusion.

We are in a new home on a new street and placed the shed what we believed was 9 ft in front of back line and 5 ft from side based on property pin located by sprinkler contractor. We received a letter to move the shed, even if only one foot is required. To do so, we will have to tear down the brand new shed and reinstall it at a cost of about $1,000. There is a dedicated watershed at the corner of our yard, so utility access is not an issue. We are not even in the City of Papillion and have no vote, but yet are subjected to the City. We are trying to work with the City and perhaps they may listen, but we are not receiving any warm feelings at this point.
