We, the undersigned parents and other caregivers of students attending Bandelier Elementary School for the 2021-2022 school year, are requesting a return to outside dining for students, weather permitting. As per the APS COVID Guidelines, “Students at school will be encouraged to eat outside when possible, and lunch schedules will be staggered to avoid large groups.” Outdoor dining was provided at Bandelier during the spring portion on the 2020-2021 school year to protect our kids from contracting and spreading COVID while eating lunch. This school year, when the COVID-19 delta variant is increasing and appears to be impacting children at a significantly higher rate than the alpha variant, it is imperative that Bandelier reinstate outdoor dining to ensure that we are taking all the necessary precautions to protect our kids while in school.

Updates

August 15, 2021

I have been reading through your comments and it is clear that many of us are struggling with the same anxiety about our children eating indoors. The school administration has yet to acknowledge our request but your stories keep me focused on why we need these safety measures in place.

August 15, 2021

The momentum behind this request is blowing me away and it proves how many of you are worried about our children eating safely. My own kids are counting on us to get this right and your energy gives me the strength to keep pushing for an answer.

Thank you to all of the teachers, staff, and administrators at Bandelier for supporting our kids through the ongoing challenges brought on by the pandemic. With the delta variant sweeping through our community, I hope that outdoor lunches can be offered once again to minimize the risk of exposure to everyone involved and protect our whole Bandelier community.

These kids need safe mask free time! Makes no sense that they are suffering indoors all day in uncooled buildings, unable to remove their masks at recess time, yet going into the cafeteria together and eating lunch!

We’ve all seen the data so far. The delta variant is not only able to infect kids at a higher rate than the previous variants, but also causes more severe symptoms including hospitalizations. We have also begun to see school closures due to high covid-positive cases in the short period of time since the school year started. We should be doing all that we can to keep our unvaccinated kids safe especially since we are dealing with a significantly different variant than last year. We CAN NOT assume everything will be OK just because we had limited success towards the end of the 2020-21 school year. Again, this is a different beast. And we most certainly shouldn’t be taking away the precautions put in place last year, like random testing and outdoor lunches.

I'm a grandma of two girls attending Bandelier and if helps control the Covid until fall or maybe just eating in their classrooms too.

This is a no brainer given the rise in cases due to the delta variant and the fact it seems to be hitting children harder than other variants. Let’s keep our kids in school by doing what we can to limit exposure. Let the kids eat outside. Not sure why they aren’t in the first place.

Please have outdoor lunch. The kids mask in their classroom, but then go and unmask in the cafeteria. Please keep the kids and teachers safe.
