Your Excellency,

We – the families, the parishioners of Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish, and the members and supporters of the Polish community – are writing regarding the recent restructuring of parishes within the Archdiocese in Detroit. We are deeply concerned that our parish may be closed or merged into other parishes, which would disrupt the mission and identity for which it was founded. Our parish was founded by Polish immigrants, built specifically to serve the Polish diaspora Catholic community in Sterling Heights. It has been sustained by generations of faithful parishioners committed to both the faith and Polish traditions.

We acknowledge the challenges the Archdiocese faces in staffing and restructuring parishes and are grateful for Your Excellency’s leadership and pastoral care during these complex transitions. We hope that you take the time to listen and strongly consider our concerns, reasonings, and requests.

While we are united within the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church, the lived expression of the Mass in our community differs significantly from what is commonly experienced in many American parishes. This is because it has been shaped by the spiritual, liturgical, and devotional traditions of Polish Catholicism, which have formed generations of faithful in reverence for the Eucharist, fidelity to the Church, and active participation in parish life. For us, these practices are essential elements of our spiritual formation and communal life as they reflect how we have been formed in reverence, belief, and devotion.

Our community was founded specifically to serve the spiritual needs of Polish Catholics. Established in 1979 as the Polish Pastoral Mission of Sterling Heights and entrusted to the Society of Christ Fathers (Chrystusowcy), our parish was built through the sacrifices and faith of Polish immigrants who sought to preserve and pass on their Catholic faith to future generations. Our parish community includes multiple generations of Polish Catholics (1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation families and even individuals who are rediscovering their Polish background) actively participating in faith formation and parish life. We host a School of Polish Language Adam Mickiewicz on parish grounds, prayer groups ranging for all age groups, ZHP scouts, youth-led Adoration services (including songs, readings, and prayers), religious classes, organized charitable drives, Polish festivals and celebrations, and so much more. The parish is also central to celebrating sacraments (baptisms, confirmations, first communions, weddings, and funerals), and we proudly hosted events like the Timothy Awards in 2024 for the faithful, hardworking youth. For many families, Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish has been the spiritual center of life for decades.

The vitality of our parish is reflected not only in its ministries but also in its sacramental life. In 2025 alone, our parish celebrated 11 baptisms, 24 First Holy Communions, 27 Confirmations, and 5 marriages, while accompanying 29 families through Christian funerals. These numbers represent real individuals and families whose faith is being nurtured within this community and demonstrate that Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish remains an active and spiritually productive parish.

With this in mind, it is important to note that our community has been raised with Catholic traditions rooted in our Polish values:

• Reception of Holy Communion kneeling and on the tongue, preserving reverence and focus on the Real Presence

• Sacred traditional hymnody without contemporary instrumentation, fostering communal prayer and devotion

• A consistent and unified order that allows the faithful, including youth, to participate fully and experience the Mass as one body

• A centrally placed Tabernacle with visible acts of reverence and devotion

• Careful Eucharistic practices emphasizing the Real Presence for children and adults alike

• Devotional traditions such as, yet not limited to, processions, extended Christmastide, and the blessing of Easter foods

• Youth engagement in altar service, Adoration, leading prayers, and community service projects

These practices have remained embedded in Polish Catholicism for centuries and form the framework through which we understand the sacred. They are not simply cultural traditions, but integral elements of how our community experiences, learns, and passes on the Catholic faith. Through these traditions, children, parents, and grandparents alike foster reverence for the Eucharist, strengthen participation in parish life, and create a sense of continuity that connects generations of faithful to one another and to the Church.

The parish has invested heavily in the formation of future generations. Since its founding, parish leaders and parishioners have built not only a church, but also a catechetical center, educational programs, and organizations dedicated to faith formation. Today, parish life extends far beyond Sunday Mass through our dedication to religious education, youth ministry, altar serving, Eucharistic adoration, prayer groups, charitable initiatives, and pilgrimages – just to name a few.

The consistency of these Polish and Catholic traditions has allowed our parish to remain a strong and vibrant community of faith. They have shaped generations of parishioners, strengthened participation in the sacraments, fostered vocations to service within the Church, and provided a stable spiritual home for families across multiple generations. For many of our parishioners, these traditions are inseparable from their Catholic identity and from the faith they seek to pass on to their children and grandchildren.

Additionally, if our parish loses its Polish (Chrystusowcy) priests or is merged into a structure that cannot preserve these traditions, many parishioners will not simply adapt – they will leave. For some, the loss of the liturgical, spiritual, and communal environment that has formed them throughout their lives would create a profound sense of displacement. These traditions are not merely customs; they are deeply connected to the ministry of our priests and the consistent pastoral care through which generations of parishioners have been formed in the faith, encountered Christ in the Eucharist, and remained actively engaged in the life of the Church. We fear that many would seek communities outside the Archdiocese – or even outside full communion with the Church – that more closely reflect the reverence, continuity, and spiritual formation they have long known and valued.

Our concerns and reasonings are not hypothetical. This is pastoral reality.

We believe our concerns are both real and well-founded, based on the experiences and testimony of parishioners who have struggled to remain connected to the faith after losing access to communities that reflect their spiritual formation.

We thus respectfully ask that the Archdiocese recognize several important realities:

• The Society of Christ for Poles Living Abroad exists specifically to serve the Polish diaspora, not as a general staffing resource for diocesan shortages. Our parish exists specifically for this purpose. Removing its priests alters that mission and hence undermines the very reason both the order and parish exist.

• The Society of Christ Fathers who serve our parish are shaped and educated in Poznań, Poland, where the order was founded specifically to minister to Poles living abroad. They come to us not simply as clergy filling vacancies, but as priests deeply formed within a specific pastoral and spiritual tradition that shapes the life of our community and its sacramental practice.

• Assigning priests whose primary formation and ministry are specifically in Polish, and for whom English is a second language, into broader English-speaking parish roles can create pastoral communication challenges for both the priests and English-speaking parishioners, particularly where clear understanding of homilies and pastoral instruction is essential.

• Ethnic parishes have historically been among the strongest sources of generational continuity in the Catholic faith, fostering deep participation, vocations, and sustained sacramental practice across multiple generations.

• Maintaining stable, practicing ethnic communities strengthens Catholic life and helps ensure the faith is passed on across generations; preserving them therefore supports the Church’s long-term continuity.

Members of our community have witnessed parishioners in local churches express difficulty fully understanding homilies due to language barriers, including differences in pronunciation, accents, or vocabulary. Our Chrystusowcy priests are deeply faithful and devoted. Their ministry within a Polish-speaking pastoral context allows them to serve the faithful with clarity and depth. Retaining their dedicated pastoral assignment ensures that our parish continues to benefit from clear preaching, consistent sacramental care, and a deeply rooted spiritual formation that has long sustained our community.

We recognize that we live and worship within an English-speaking society, and our parish has adapted accordingly over the years. Weekday Masses are offered in English, confessions are heard in both English and Polish, and many aspects of parish life accommodate the needs of younger generations and mixed-language families. However, it is important to note that these accommodations do not alter the fundamental mission and identity of our parish. We remain a Polish parish, established to serve the Polish Catholic community and sustained by generations of Polish faithful who built, supported, and preserved it. The integration of the English language into certain aspects of parish life reflects pastoral necessity, not a departure from the purpose for which our parish was founded. The question before us is not whether our parish can function in English; it is whether a parish to serve the Polish Catholic community will be able to continue to be permitted to fulfill its mission.

We are also particularly concerned about the impact the restructuration will have on our young people. Many of our youth serve as altar servers, participate in Eucharistic adoration, assist with charitable drives and events, attend religious classes and Youth Group, and help lead prayer through music and scripture readings. The stability and continuity of parish life have been essential in fostering their active participation in the Church as it connects their cultural identity and heritage to their growing faith. Disrupting the parish's identity risks weakening one of the strongest sources of Catholic formation available to our future generations.

We therefore ask plainly that in addressing broader diocesan shortages, every effort be made to ensure that the loss of a faithful and practicing community is avoided. We believe such communities should not be placed at risk.

What we seek to preserve is not merely cultural expression, but a coherent and disciplined lived experience of the Latin Rite. In Polish parishes served by the Society of Christ, the faithful encounter consistency in posture, music, reverence, and cultural and liturgical life. This unity allows adults and children alike to participate fully and experience the Church truly as one body.

At the same time, the wide variation in liturgical practice across many parishes can weaken the shared identity and continuity that sustain Catholic life, making it more difficult to maintain a long-term sense of formation and participation across generations. For this reason, if the goal is to strengthen the Church, preserving ethnic communities that are alive, faithful, and deeply committed to the Eucharist must remain a priority.

It is in this light that, for more than four decades, Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish has served as a spiritual home for Polish Catholics throughout the region. What began in 1979 as a Polish Pastoral Mission has grown into a thriving parish community sustained by the dedication of priests, religious missionary sisters, parish organizations, volunteers, and families committed to living and passing on the Catholic faith.

This is why we respectfully but firmly ask that our parish retain its autonomy, its Polish priests, youth programs, community activities, and the liturgical life that sustains it. Unity in the Church must be not only theological, but visible and lived consistently by the faithful in their daily worship and participation in parish life.

We thus call upon the Archdiocese to preserve Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish in a way that allows it to continue its mission for which the Society of Christ and this Polish Catholic parish was established, sustaining its current pastoral leadership, liturgical traditions, youth programs, and community life.

We ask that the parish remain entrusted to the Society of Christ Fathers, in continuity with the mission for which both the parish and order were recognized. Any merger, closure, or loss of dedicated pastoral leadership would risk weakening a vibrant community that continues to form practicing Catholics and contribute to the life of the Church in southeastern Michigan.

We thank Your Excellency for your attention, pastoral care, and dedication to all the faithful under your guidance. May Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish continue to flourish as a center of faith, culture, and community for Polish Catholics in our region, and we thank you for the thought and effort you have and will put into protecting it.

Respectfully,

The Faithful of Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish

Ekscelencjo,

My – rodziny, parafianie Kościoła im.

Dla nas praktyki te stanowią istotny element formacji duchowej i życia wspólnotowego, odzwierciedlając sposób, w jaki zostaliśmy uformowani w wierze, czci i pobożności.

• Jednolity i spójny porządek liturgii umożliwiający pełne uczestnictwo wiernych

Dzisiaj życie parafialne sięga daleko poza niedzielną Mszę dzięki naszemu zaangażowaniu w edukację religijną, duszpasterstwo młodzieży, służbę liturgiczną, adorację Najświętszego Sakramentu, założenie grup modlitewnych, inicjatywy charytatywne i pielgrzymki – i to tylko kilka przykładów.

Spójność tych polskich i katolickich tradycji pozwoliła naszej parafii pozostać silną i żywą wspólnotą wiary.

• Utrzymywanie stabilnych, praktykujących wspólnot etnicznych wzmacnia życie katolickie i pomaga w przekazywaniu wiary kolejnym pokoleniom; ich ochrona wspiera więc długoterminową ciągłość Kościoła.

Pozostajemy parafią polską, założoną, aby służyć polskiej społeczności katolickiej i podtrzymywaną przez polskie pokolenia wiernych, którzy ją budowali, wspierali i pielęgnowali.

Dlatego prosimy wprost, aby przy rozwiązywaniu szerszych braków diecezjalnych dołożyć wszelkich starań, by uniknąć utraty wiernej i praktykującej wspólnoty.

Z wyrazami szacunku,

Wierni Parafii Matki Bożej Częstochowskiej

It is paramount that this cultural and religious staple in the Metro Detroit community be preserved. This Parish has had massive influence in the region, serving as a beacon for the Polish-American community and beyond. I grew up in this Parish, as did many of the young Polish Americans in the Metro Detroit area and without it, home is not home.
