Seemingly, every ten to twelve years the healthcare community comes up with a scheme to either pigeon-hole or eradicate LPN's. With the healthcare community favoring the services of RN's over LPN's in hospital, administrative, and supervisory roles, LPN's are left to care for the nation's Geriatric population with a nurse patient ratio of 30 or 40:1, compared to an RN in a hospital setting of 4-6:1. Many seasoned LPN's face the disappointment of either having to retake some, if not all of the required courses it took to become licensed in the first place stating that they have either expired, or have been taken too long ago. So does that mean that we as LPN's have expired too? Continually striving for excellence, we pride ourselves in quality of care we provide. Sometimes under extreme pressure, we practice our skills quite proficiently daily and participate in continuing education? LPN's are, and will continue to be valuable and vital part of the healthcare team, and should be afforded the right to matriculate up to the level of RN without restriction.
