When I, myself, was a student at Santa Fe Middle School in the 80's, a drama/English teacher drew the concerned attention of a large group of students and parents for sexually inappropriate conduct, weak teaching, and the clear, active grooming of one student outside of the classroom. When confronted, this teacher cloaked himself in his union protections and threatened a lawsuit if the board let him go. His contract was renewed until his own chosen retirement date, and as a result, he continued active leadership in Newton Community Theater for years, as well. I wonder how many of our community's youth were sexually exploited or threatened or made sexually uneasy by this powerful man and Newton school board's unwillingness to take the threat he posed to children and youth seriously. The only times I knew teachers or coaches were fired, in district, while I was a youth there, is when teachers had actually groomed students long enough to rape them. This happened at least twice at the high school with teachers and coaches. It is unconscionable to not address clear warning signals of sexual misconduct. I now have nieces and nephews in the district and I insist that you take teachers' sexual misconduct seriously and not renew Me. Wiens' contract, based on years' worth of evidence provided by students and the community.
Or else plan to face expensive litigation for gross negligence in your future and ever-increasing community pressure. This is no longer the 80's. So much has been brought to light about the lasting trauma of childhood sexual abuse, and churches and schools' role in preventing and stopping it. Step up to your responsibility. Put children's mental, sexual, and physical health above adult fraternalism.

Beyond firing him for his alleged inappropriate sexual behavior with minors, Wiens is a terrible horrible no good very bad teacher. We can do better for our kids!!

It's frustrating that kids were talking 3 years ago when my son was in Chisholm about this man and he still holds a teaching position. Sickening!!

I want our school administrators to do their job and protect our children. It saddens me that when presented with evidence of misconduct, the school board and superintendent still defended this man.

That this is even a question is horrifying and extremely disconcerting. The elementary and Santa Fe spend time teaching kids how to safely respond to these situations which is important. Yet, the school will also employ the very types of individuals they warn against? Does the Board have any 7th graders? Put them in his class then! I will refuse to have my two girls who will be 7th graders next year in his class.

Its ridiculous that its had to come to parents making a stand. Our schools should have stood up long ago.

We do not need teacher a teacher that is going to subject our children to these kind of things. And we should not have to worry if our children are safe or not. Get rid of this teacher and stop turning a blind eye to what he is doing
