We, the youth civil society of the Maldives, condemn the coordinated actions taken by Dr. Mohammed Waheed Hassan Manik, the Maldives Police Service, Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), and opposition groups to usurp the legitimate government of President Mohammed Nasheed. We stand united against the coup led by Waheed, the Police Service, MNDF, Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party (DRP), Progressive Party Maldives (PPM), Dhivehi Quamee Party (DQP), Jumhooree Party, and Adhaalath Party, and call for the restoration of democracy and human rights protections. We condemn the violent excessive force used against President Nasheed, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), and Maldivian citizens in support of democracy by the Police Service and MNDF. We condemn the suspension of fundamental human rights, including the freedoms of assembly, speech, press, self-determination, liberty and security from arbitrary arrest and detention, as well as the curtailment of our democratic society. We condemn the suspension of the Maldivian Constitution and the rights and freedoms protected there in. We condemn the false representation of civil society by Madhanee Ihthihaadh (group of NGOs) claiming to represent Maldivian youth civil society in support of Waheed’s illegitimate government. We call for the restoration of democracy, rule of law, human rights and constitutional protections for all Maldivian citizens. We demand Waheed resign immediately and call for free and fair elections to be held. We demand justice for Maldivian citizens, including the immediate removal and prosecution of MNDF and Police Services participating in the coup, Waheed as well as those in the Judiciary, People’s Majilis, and private businesses who have provided resources for the coup. We demand that transitional justice measures be implemented immediately for thorough and proper vetting of government institutions to remove those who have usurped democracy, the Maldivian Constitution, and human rights, as well as prevent this from happening in the future. We implore the United Nations and international community to oppose Waheed’s illegitimate government and support the restoration of democracy and human rights in the Maldives immediately.
