We the residents and parents of students attending schools along Edmund Rice Drive, respectfully request the opening of the gate at the corner of Edmund Rice Drive and Village Road during school hours. 7:00–9:00 AM and 2:00–4:00 PM
Currently this gate remains closed forcing all traffic to funnel through a single entry and exit point. With three schools situated along Edmund Rice Drive, this limited access results in significant congestion, delays and safety concerns, particularly at the main intersection on Southport-Nerang Road.
Opening this gate during school hours would:
- Alleviate traffic congestion by providing an additional access point.
- Improve safety for students, parents and residents.
- Reduce travel time for parents heading north.
We urge the relevant authorities to consider this practical solution to enhance traffic flow and ensure the safety and efficiency of our community during critical school hours.

I’ve worked at guardian angels school for 21 years and the traffic is ridiculous.
The congestion at school pick up is so horrible and dangerous. It can take over 20 minutes to leave the street.
About time. This would make an amazing difference to school drop and pick. As a parent of both GA 2017-2023 now a parent of AQ I would love the freedom and flow of opening up of the gate
And join the new bike way on Smith Street to Edmund Rice Dr so that student bike riders and scooter riders can also use the bike way.
We have resided behind the school for 25 years. Our children attended GA and AQ. We have previously signed numerous petitions on this matter. As residents, we find it frustrating that we are unable to exit our street onto Edmund Rice Drive during peak school hours due to traffic congestion, which often extends past the gun club and towards the university. Consequently, we avoid leaving our home between 2:30-3:30 pm daily to avoid prolonged waiting. It would be sensible to consider opening the southern end of Edmund Rice Drive as a one-way exit, allowing parents direct access onto Smith Street and facilitating travel in multiple directions, similar to the exit near Molendinar and Tip Top Bakery. Just another option that could be considered .

There also needs to be no parking on the road in front of Aquinas College during peak pick up and drop off times. When leaving AQ there is only one lane to exit onto Edmund Rice and this lane is completely stopped waiting for the lights. If there were no cars parked on the left, cars that need to turn left would be able to turn onto Edmund Rice without waiting for all the cars that need to turn right.
