On April 7th, 2015 the honorable Representative Ron Hood (along with twenty cosponsors) introduced House Bill 147 to revise the licensing requirements for concealed weapons to be carried. The bill, if passed would removed licensure requirements to conceal a weapon in our great state. As college students, and citizens of the Mahoning Valley, this bill is very concerning.
As you are aware, currently Ohio requires an eight hour course where applicants learn safe firearm handling as well as our state’s laws for self defense. Further, applicants are also required to submit to a criminal background check to ensure there is nothing that would preclude them from concealing a firearm in most public places. This legislation, if passed as written would essentially make this optional, meaning anyone who can purchase a firearm would be allowed to conceal it in public.
We are not alone in this concern. To quote Jay McDonald, President of the Fraternal Order of Police for the State of Ohio: “We are in favor of concealed carry, but we are not in favor of eliminating the licensing procedure. There are a lot of good things that come with the licensing, and one of those is training”. His position is further echoed in the opinion of Robert Cornwell, Executive Director of the Buckeye State Sheriff’s Association: “We feel as though individuals who are going to carry concealed need some sort of training and education on Ohio’s use-of-force laws and work on the range.”
We, the undersigned do hereby oppose the language of House Bill 147. This bill as introduced would not only make the state of Ohio a barbaric ”Wild West” type state, it will also deprive responsible gun owners, and non gun owning citizens the right to enjoy their liberty, and their life without the constant possibility of heightened danger more firearms wielded by improperly prepared citizens would create. Please, use your power as an elected offical to change the language of this dangerous bill.

A comprehensive training course and license should be mandatory to ensure that knowledge of safe handling procedures is acquired. A background check/license should be required.
We don't let people drive cars when they turn 16 without proper training and instruction because it could be deadly. I favor protocols for acquiring firearms to keep Ohioans safe.
Why is this even an issue? People don't have any common sense. If you are going to carry a gun you need training. Period.
Expanding the Concealed Carry Gun rights only will expand the number of homicides in Ohio.
Obviously (at least to me) a ridiculous bill. These basic requirements are no real strain on gun owners and are certainly necessary to properly ensure the safety of said gun owners alongside everyone else.
Heres the problem folks. WE can ALREADY CARRY WITHOUT any permit OR training...its ALWAYS been legal to OPEN carry without either in Ohio. The ONLY thing this law does in REALITY is make it so people who ALREADY CARRYING OPENLY WITHOUT THE PERMIT OR TRAINING can do so concealed. You people dont like SEEING our guns, correct? these OPEN CARRIERS WHO ALREADY CARRY WITHOUT licensing or training will be able to carry the gun concealed where you people DONT HAVE TO LOOK AT THEM if this were to pass. Let me put it this way. MY wife WILL BE CARRYING OPENLY because she doesnt have a concealed carry permit. This means YOU all will be FORCED to see her gun and there isnt anything you can do about it by law. This law simply makes it so she CAN CARRY CONCEALED instead of OPENLY (again WITHOUT THE LICENSING OR PERMIT). So I ask...do you REALLY want to SEE her gun...or dont you? Because I was under the impression that you all DIDNT like seeing them. So do you cut your nose off to spite your face and force her to carry OPENLY? Or do you do the adult thing here and accept the fact that she IS GOING TO CARRY OPENLY WITHOUT a permit if you fight this change in the law. Either way she WILL be carrying..concealed if it passes....or openly if it to doesnt. Your choice.

Let me add that the law requires training and licensing for CONCEALED CARRY ONLY. There is NO LAW that prohibits OPEN CARRY without licensing or the classes. This description above is VERY MISLEADING in that it makes you THINK something is changing about whether we can carry WITHOUT THE training and that simply is not true. Right now my UNLICENSED wife can put a gun in a holster on her belt and walk right on out the door and the law doesnt prohibit it. This law simply would allow her to ALSO carry it concealed like I did WITH the permit. Do you people realize that youre seroiusly arguing against a NON issue here? All youre doing is making it so people who DONT want to get the permit will continue to carry OPENLY.
