From Jan 2011 onwards the NZTA is proposing to charge for every accessto the Motor Vehicle Register.
As a consumer and a voter, I am horrified at this proposal. At presentthe basic information from the NZTA database is available throughthird parties at no charge.
Many free online websites rely on this data to pass on as a publicservice. For example, I can currently find out if a car has beenreported stolen or if the odometer has been tampered with at nocharge. This service will end under the NZTA's proposal.
The NZTA claims that these proposed new charges are necessary for costrecovery. However, this information has already been paid for by thepublic in the form of licensing fees, registration fees, WOF and COFcosts. It belongs to me as a motorist. I don't see why I should haveto pay for it twice.
Crime and fraud statistics are high and this proposal will undoubtedlyresult in an increase in ordinary people getting ripped off.

This is going to make it so much easier for scammers to sell lemons. stop being greedy nzta.
Seems like they are trying to hide something. nobody should have to pay extra to check if a car is legit before they buy it.
Absolute joke. we already pay enough in registration fees and now they want to double dip? keep the data open for everyone.
