We, the undersigned, call on the NVCC Board of Directors to re-visit the issue of non-members participating on USTA tennis teams with the necessary input of the NVCC tennis community.

Updates

June 7, 2017

The Board tried to pretend we did not exist but this level of momentum forces them to pay attention. They need to stop ignoring the community and start listening to the people who actually use these courts.

Hard to believe this was the best solution the board could come up with. Where is the creativity? I am a golf member at nvcc but tennis is my focus. Neither the day league or Usta team I play on will go forward without nonmembers to complete the rosters. There is no point in staying and paying dues at a club that can't support a variety of teams. So, like others, I will be resigning my membership.

We have been active members of NVCC for over 12 years and have watched the tennis program grow into the success it is today. This change by the Board would be a huge step backwards and effectively defeat the program. Change does need to occur; but not total elimination. Let’s work out a way to charge more to non-members or reduce their numbers, but not completely ban them from being on our teams. Thank you for your consideration.

As a paying member I feel that it is unfair to have anyone not paying dues to play on our courts. The NVCC has made a concession for new members to join and the NVCC will waive the fees and only pay the dues. It is affordable to play at NVCC. What motivation do paying members have we can play on or at the NVCC and we just stop paying dues at just play as a team member. To maintain the courts and be a member should be shared by all. My views are sure not shared by many but I pay my dues and so should anyone using the courts.

I joined NVCC for tennis and social events, with the expectation of competitive team tennis. If we are unable to create/sustain teams with current membership, then it seems counter intuitive to completely eliminate non-members. I do understand the position, but it would seem a compromise would be a prudent step...perhaps max 40% non-member for the next 12 months, then down to 25%. Adding regular clinics and events might have the added benefit of encouraging membership and getting current members more active in our tennis community thereby eliminating this pain point.

Having been a member, ranging from executive to social memberships over the last 12 years, myself and others, fully understand the core issue. Also, having read many of the comments in the petition I understand the emotions on both sides of this "prickly" issue. It would seem to me that there could be a common sense compromise that could support both perspectives. Better management of the ratio of member to non-member participants, and pursuing a fee structure that is fair and equitable to all, would seem to be a reasonable starting place. This type of common sense, manageable approach could keep current members from bolting, and with some creative outreach and marketing to non-members, could financially benefit NVCC. However, an absolute termination of any type of non- membership participation would effectively, at least in the short term, eliminate any resemblance of competitive team play at NVCC. Many, if not most tennis players, wish to participate in venues where there is access to competitive team play. The elimination of competitive team play would force many, including our family, to leave a great club, and a 12 year relationship. Please consider the financial and reputational aspects to NVCC before you embark on hasty policy changes.

To ignore the hard work and very fair proposal of our tennis committee member and not allow the tennis NVCC members a fair voice is unacceptable. The decision to not allow non-members at any rate to play on NVCC USTA teams is short-sighted and will hurt our club. I urge you to reconsider and approve the very fair and economically feasible proposal submitted by the committee. This new rule destroys our competitive tennis team culture. Thank you.

I believe that non-members should be able to play to fill the three division teams.

We are long time members of NVCC. We originally joined as tennis members and then upgraded to full members. We have enjoyed our Club membership over the years, the friends who we have met here, and the tennis and golf activities and teams that we have participated in. My husband--Bill Carden has served on various Club committees including the Tennis Committee. He was also director of the BOD and served as president. He was called the Tennis president because the tennnis program at NVCC was very important to him. The situation where non members can play on Club teams has always been a concern to us as is the financial well being of our Club. I recently learned that in last season's teams there were 93 non members and 110 members. In addition, non members pay $50 per season..which in my opinion is peanuts. I am a member at Wailea Tennis Club in Maui which is not a private club. Non members must pay a fee of $15 for 1 1/2 hours when playing with members or same fee for one hour if there are no members on court. The $50 fee that non members pay at NVCC for the season does not even give 3 days of court time for non members at Wailea TC. I also learned that there was a non Club member serving as a team captain of a team with 17 non members on the roster. I also heard that captains are playing non members over members on team matches. After golf today, I spoke to a friend who used to play on a Club tennis team, but quit the team and is playing elsewhere because the same thing happened to her. This is outrageous! We are not completely opposed to non members playing on Club teams. If non members are needed in order to field a team, it should be a small , limited number of non members...and non members must pay their fair share, and respect our members, our Club policies and our beautiful facility.
