Nurses, who comprise the largest professional group in our nation's healthcare system, are diverse. We are heterosexual and LGBT; Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and all other religions; black, white, yellow, and brown; and we were born in the U.S. and are immigrants.

We work as school nurses, in emergency departments, as labor coaches, in intensive care units, in addiction centers, as diabetes counselors, and in a myriad of other roles and locations.

But, the one constant of United States' nurses is that we work very hard to promote, maintain, and restore the health of our patients and we are sick and tired of caring for innocent victims of gun violence.

WE DEMAND THAT YOU PERFORM YOUR DUTY AND PASS LEGISLATION TO STOP THE SALE OF ASSAULT WEAPONS IN OUR COUNTRY.

Updates

June 19, 2016

The stories shared in the comments reveal the heavy toll that repeated trauma takes on those who serve in our clinics and hospitals. Processing these experiences reinforces the urgency of our commitment to advocacy beyond the bedside.

June 19, 2016

Reaching this current level of support confirms that the trauma my colleagues witness in our emergency rooms is not a burden we carry alone. The steady growth here reflects a growing consensus that clinical practice cannot remain separated from the safety of our communities.

Because I never want to have to care for a person who has been victim of a massacre.
