Dear Superintendent Cosca and the NUSD Board of Trustees,
We are Novato Parents for Education and Return to School. We are concerned about the direction NUSD is taking with regards to a return to school of our children. We can no longer voice our opinions just on social media and in letters to Superintendent Cosca. Those letters feel ineffective and the replies, patronizing. We need answers, we need dates, we need to know what the plan is for reentry. Asking us for more flexibility is not an option for us or our children.
We are extremely frustrated with NUSD. Should our current Covid climate stay the same, the County Public Health Department has determined it is safe to start the reopening process. A fluctuating answer and changes of thresholds for our District is unacceptable. The school district has had more than 5 months to plan for those of us who chose the in-person option. For those who want to remain remote, they had a choice too. We chose flexible in-person for reasons that work best for our children and we expect the District to honor our choice as soon as possible.
Last Spring, you asked us to come to the table and give our input. We did. We have and will continue to do so. Many of us stepped up when asked and hundreds participated in the reentry committees. Teachers and the District Office were included in this process. We gave our feedback and a report was compiled and submitted. Stick to this report. Follow the State and County Guidelines. The hybrid plan doesn’t work for families or teachers and we want to see our children back in-person at school 5 days per week. There is no excuse for not being ready.
Many children’s mental health is deteriorating.
Many assessment are not being performed, IEP’s are not being honored, and the district is out of compliance.
Many teachers are ready to be back in the classroom.
Many families need to return to work.
We invite you to revisit the date to return to school. We do not believe waiting (Until 10/26 or somewhere beyond) is in the best interest of our children, the school district, or for the inequities this has shed light upon in our town. Many families left our District last week when they lost hope for us being able to return to school in-person. Delays will only result in the loss of even more families, creating another unintentional crisis in a district already in trouble. The district owes it to the Students and Families to re-evaluate this decision!

It’s over due....get the kids back to school!...if it’s okay for the kids to be out on the fields conditioning For High School Sports and baseball games being played at Sinaloa every weekend for the last 3 months Then it should be okay for our kids to be back in school.
Please open the schools. There is no reason why children should be on any tablet or computer for over 4 hours a day. If the private school and daycare programs can run and be open during COVID-19 than our public schools can be open as well.
As a mental health crisis professional, I am seeing first hand the effect that keeping kids out of in-person school is having, and it’s alarming. Please, let’s safely get our kids back in school!
It is time for NUSD and the NFT to come together and bring our kids back to school. Our district is hemorrhaging students because we are not starting school, and it can be done safely. Please find a way to make this work.
I agree with the comments above. My child needs social interaction and I have been paying out of pocket for tutors so I can go back to work. Will the NUSD reimburse me for the money I have spent as a single parent to try and make ends meet?

Between the lagging zoom, laptop malfunctions and teachers ending classes early, how do you think keeping these students home is helping them??? Assignments are being tossed up in Google classroom without instruction. There’s nobody holding the online classes or teachers accountable to any standard. The damage caused here is so much worse than you can imagine. Let’s show our students what strength really is and get back to class.

Two Essential employees looking for structure for their two children. I’m a union member and we did what was best for the community and continued to work threw this pandemic no extra pay no extra benefits. Just did what was right.
