D59 students have been out of school since March 13, 2020 because of COVID-19. Local metrics confirm that we can get back to school safely using appropriate safety guidelines. Neighboring public school districts have returned or have plans to return in the next few weeks.
D59 presented a plan that would allow students to return in 4 weeks, for 8 total hours a week. A typical in-person student week is approximately 35 hours. Students would also return in a staggered fashion, 1-2 grade levels per week, so if your student is in 4th, 5th, 8th grade, he/she will not return for 7 weeks. How does the district and the BOE expect working families to make a schedule work that dismisses students in the middle of the workday? We need a better plan.
Students are losing out academically and emotionally. Studies have shown that the mental health of students is concerning. Kids need to be in school. Private schools all over have returned to full-day session without widespread COVID-19 outbreaks.
COVID-19 is not going away. We need to get our kids back in school. Students and their families are suffering.
We are demanding that the D59 Board of Education and the district provide us with a solid plan that meets the needs of all stakeholders and, most importantly, GET OUR KIDS BACK TO SCHOOL NOW!
Los estudiantes del D59 han estado fuera de la escuela desde el 13 de marzo de 2020 debido a COVID-19. Las métricas locales confirman que podemos regresar a la escuela de manera segura utilizando las pautas de seguridad adecuadas. Los distritos escolares públicos vecinos han regresado o tienen planes de regresar en las próximas semanas.
El D59 presentó un plan que permitiría a los estudiantes regresar en 4 semanas, por un total de 8 horas a la semana. Una semana típica para estudiantes en persona es de aproximadamente 35 horas. Los estudiantes también regresarían de manera escalonada, de 1 a 2 niveles de grado por semana, por lo que si su estudiante está en 4 °, 5 °, 8 ° grado, no regresará durante 7 semanas. ¿Cómo esperan el distrito y la BOE que las familias trabajadoras hagan un horario de trabajo que despida a los estudiantes en medio de la jornada laboral? Estamos exigiendo que la Junta de Educación del D59 y el distrito nos proporcionen un plan sólido que satisfaga las necesidades de todos los interesados y, lo más importante, ¡HAGA QUE NUESTROS NIÑOS REGRESEN A LA ESCUELA AHORA!

this momentum is wild and i honestly didnt think we would get this much traction so fast. it feels like people are finally starting to listen because everyone is clearly frustrated with the current plan. thanks for sticking with me while we push for something better for the kids.

im spending my time writing emails to the board members because what they offered just isnt enough for families. hearing what everyone has been going through with their kids makes me more determined than ever to keep pushing for a real full day return.

I couldn't support this more. It is appalling that the superintendent and the school board think that 8 hours of in-person instruction is enough for students. They have definitely let down the students the families and the teachers of district 59.
I have seen kids back in school what a change and they love it wearing masks too.
Please provide better plan, parents need to work and the kids need to go back to school as soon as possible. Thanksgiving week is not an option.
4 hours 2x a week??? Who will be with my kids for the rest of the day?! Private schools and day care centers are in person full time- and district comes up with 4 hours twice a week?! Come up with a better plan! Ours kids have been dealing with this since March- get them back to school for their education and social interaction with proper guidelines! And then to tell us if some choose remote- they may be in remote for rest of year?! Either way- kids are losing out! Get our kids back in school full time!
We need to have full days, not half days available. If Kids Club is able to safely operate in my children’s school until 6PM, why can the school be open full day?
Time to reopen our schools and focus on our mission: Preparing students to be successful for life.

59 and 214 are poorly led and have only their own best interests in mind - meaning >$200k and >$300k salaries respectively. Open the schools because students here are falling further and further behind in learning and socialization skills. Or is that the plan - dumbing down the masses?
