I want to help create an inclusive environment in the Town of North Salem, NY.

By signing this petition, I am among those asking the Town Board of the Town of North Salem, NY to adopt a resolution to affirmatively state that our town always has been and continues to be a community that protects the rights of all of its residents regardless of their national origin.

We denounce anti-semitism, racism, bigotry, religious/ethnic discrimination, hatred and bullying of any member of our community.

We are committed to protecting the life, safety and security of all individuals regardless of their race, religion, ethnicity, gender, gender orientation, gender identity, or national origin.

The resolution states, in part, that the enforcement of immigration laws is the responsibility of the Federal government and its various enforcement agencies and not the role of the Town of North Salem. It further states that, in carrying out their work, the North Salem Police Department and any other town departments will not inquire about an individual’s immigration status, without a judicial warrant.

For the safety of our citizenry, we believe our police department practices are designed to promote mutual respect and maintain an open dialogue with all community members. The town will continue to apprehend those of any background and immigration status who commit crimes or threaten the safety of our community.

We should follow other "enlightened" Northern Westchester communities in adopting this resolution

I'm concerned about the exception for judicial warrants. I think that should be removed. I'm having trouble imagining a situation where a court could issue a warrant ordering a person to tell his/her immigration status to authorities. warrants are issued for search & seizure or for arrest. The clause should be removed, then I'm ready to sign.

Most of us are the great grandchildren, grandchildren or offspring of immigrants. It is difficult to understand that anyone would be against the resolution.

We must protect our community from the damage this will do. Our local resources and local law enforcement must stay out of immigration enforcement!

It's incomprehensible why any of our Town Board members would be unwilling to support this petition.

North Salem is such a beautiful town, and keeping it inclusive will keep it feeling that way for centuries to come.
