To the Navy Chief of Staff:
It has come to our attention that the US Navy is naming a San Antonia Class warship used primarily by the Marines after the late Congressman John Murtha of Pennsylvania who was a Marine himself. While his service to this nation is to be commended, his words spoken on the floor of the House of Representatives falsely accusing fellow Marines of cold blooded murder is nothing short of reprehensible.
Because of this, we feel that his name should not be honored in any way, and we respectfully request that you rethink this action.
I have been reading every single story you all share about the history of the Haditha incident and the way those words still hurt the Corps today. It is clear that this naming decision is a slap in the face to the Marines who served with honor. I am currently compiling your comments to send directly to the Navy oversight office so they cannot ignore the weight of your frustration.

The momentum behind this effort is growing and it honestly speaks to how many of you refuse to let the betrayal of our Marines go unacknowledged. Seeing this response makes me realize that we are truly striking a chord for those who were wrongly accused by a man who should have been defending them.

He betrayed the Corps with those comments. No ship should bear his name. Simple as that.

Ridiculous decision. Why would you name a warship after a guy who threw his own people under the bus.

This is a slap in the face to every Marine serving today. Find someone else to name it after.

My husband served and he is furious about this. Pick someone who actually supported his brothers.

UNACCEPTABLE. The navy needs to get its head straight and respect the people who actually fought.
