Background information:
The University of Manitoba has installed parking meters in N lot with the intent of charging for evenings and weekends. Different University administrators have suggested that this will become effective May 1st, 2011 or September 1st, 2011. UMSU has been given NO clear answer as to how the University will implement these rates, which lots will be affected, and which regulating body will be responsible for voting on any changes towards parking fee structures. The lack of transparency around this issue draws concerns that this will set a precedent for other parking stations around campus to follow suit. The University campus is the workplace of students and as such need to have access to the proper tools to enhance their academic experience.

We feel that students are NOT in support of the University of Manitoba charging for parking on campus during evening and weekend hours. Students come to campus using their vehicles in the evenings and weekends for various campus and community events, studying, athletics, meetings, and exams. Charging for parking during the evenings and weekends would be detrimental to the student experience. Metered machines are expensive, and during the winter do not necessarily function to the best of their ability.
We, the undersigned, want the University of Manitoba Administration to:
1. Reconsider the plan of charging for evening and weekend parking on campus,
2. Take the existing machines already installed in 'N' lot and move them to the ''Toonie' lot (west of the soccer complex) to help with efficiency
3. Meet with UMSU to discuss alternatives
4. Create an established procedure and/or committee with student representation for determining how rates are determined and adjusted

The lack of transparency from the administration continues to be the most concerning aspect of these proposed parking changes. Many of you have shared stories about how these fees create unnecessary barriers to accessing campus facilities during essential evening hours. This feedback provides a clear picture of why a reconsideration of these plans is necessary.

The momentum behind this effort is encouraging because it shows how many of us rely on reasonable access to our campus after hours. If we reach one hundred signatures today, we will have a much stronger foundation for our discussion with the administration.

Already paying way too much for tuition. This is just another way for the school to bleed us dry for every cent.
I have night classes and this is gonna kill my budget. Stop being so greedy!!!!!!
It was free for years. Why change it now? Total robbery.
Ridiculous. We are already students not cash cows.
SERIOUSLY? Some of us work and can only study at night. Why are you punishing students for trying to get an education.
