I do not support a strong mayor system in Yakima.
Currently, several members of city council are exploring the idea of changing our system to a “strong mayor” system. This would shift the power towards one elected mayor which would run “at large”. The ACLU, sued the city of Yakima and won in 2013. This lawsuit cost taxpayers 3 million dollars. ACLU staff attorney Breanne Schuster noted, “The court’s findings apply equally to any citywide election, whether it is for City Council or mayor.” This would potentially lead to very costly litigation at the taxpayer’s expense.

The strongman mayor system is dictatorial. Giving all power and authority to one person cannot assure benevolence to the diverse members of the community.
No to sting mayor system. We cannot afford to go backwards. We cannot affor years of litigation when there is already a federal court ruling saying this the of voting system does not work (and discriminates) in Yakima.
I not support a strong mayor at all..
No strong mayor! Yakima still has much work to do to make sure voices of the disenfranchised are being heard and counted.
I strongly disagree with one person having power over the city of Yakima.

A strong mayor system did not work prior to the ACLU lawsuit against the city of Yakima; people of color were disenfranchised under this system. No to a strong mayor governance.
