We do not support the HALA upzones. This is not a vote against affordability, this is a vote of no-confidence that affordability will improve under HALA zoning changes. The upzones are a developer-driven policy that will decimate Seattle neighborhoods. Our existing affordable housing stock is at risk in the development frenzy that would follow these sweeping zoning changes.
We are tired of top-down policies that benefit rich developers at the expense of everyone else. We are tired of an urbanist ideology that believes more development, with disregard to everything else, is the answer to every problem.
We urge our City Council and Mayor: Just say NO to massive, one-size-fits all HALA upzones. Say yes to real solutions to affordability that focus on non-profits. Capture money from this development boom to use towards affordable housing. Listen to the people of Seattle who you have been elected to represent.
Furthermore, I pledge to vote against any Seattle City Councilmember who approves the HALA upzones and I pledge to vote against Mayor Murray if he continues forward with this inequitable housing agenda.

Hala proposals to up-zone urban villages will result in increased gentrification, displacement and ultimately fewer affordable units. It is a patently flawed proposal that benefits moneyed interests at the expense of Seattle citizens.
We have not seen housing become affordable with increased density. I cannot afford to live in Ballard anymore, the neighborhood I grew up in and my grandmother grew up in. Nothing is sacred anymore shame on the city council and the profiteers.
We do need to find solutions for affordable housing but not solely at the expense on current home owners and neighborhoods. It's already a problem with funding everything through property taxes--property taxes have reached a point where I can barely make my mortgage payment anymore.
While HALA was sold to us as making housing more affordable, so far it has gotten more expensive. The elimination of parking has added to making Ballard more expensive, and impossible for older people, for shopping, eating out, or any other activities.
Catering to developers does nothing to create affordable housing. The housing being built is very expensive, and contributes to driving the poor out of town (or into homelessness). Heavy development is also seriously reducing the greenscape that makes neighborhoods livable.
Sometimes it actually is a "Not In My Back Yard!" situation. Zoning is meant to help to create some stability to what a neighborhood looks like, how it works and the sort of activities someone can expect. We invest in our home, our community and our lives based on a neighborhood. Changing those parameters under the guise of "affordability" is disingenuous and divisive. What comes from these canyons made of buildings is not affordability. Meanwhile, it appears to cater to developer profits, with little in the way of family housing or appropriate transit, amenities and a big loss of livability.

The best way to increase the amount of affordable housing is to allow small houses and ADUs with incentives rather than fees. There need to be standards to keep neighborhoods livable, particularly setbacks from taller buildings. Any new zoning should allow for design standards.
