We the undersigned taxpayers of Virginia Beach are adamantly opposed to any tax dollars being used in any manner for the construction of, or participation in, a new convention center hotel.
We believe that if a new hotel is needed, the private sector will build it. If it isn't a profitable venture, they won't. This proposal flies in the face of common sense, and violates the free market system by favoring one business over another.
We further demand that all projects exceeding the $10 million City Charter requirement be placed on a public referendum as provided by law. Circumventing Beach taxpayers by issuing debt through the economic development authority is unethical, and insults citizens who are responsible for the debt.
